In 2001, he was awarded the Prabal Gorkha Dakshin Bahu by the late King of Nepal Birendra Bir Bikram Shah Dev and also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 2009.

Udit started his singing career by singing for a Radio Nepal in 1970s. Udit Narayan was used to sing Nepali folk, Bhojpuri and Maithili on the radio. Udit traveled to Mumbai in 1978 under the music scholarship, where he took six year's training in Indian classical music at BharatiyaVidyaBhavan.Udit Narayan got his first break in Indian Hindi film industry with Rajesh Roshan's film 'Unees Bees' in 1980. For the film he sang with his idol Mohammed Rafi. But his real break came with the film Qayamat Se QayamatTak in 1988. The film led him to stardom. The film was hit and along with Udit the two starts of the film Amir Khan, JuhiChawla and singer AlkaYagnik also fetched to stardom. In Qayamat Se QayamatTak, Udit sang a song 'Papa KehteHai', which earned him his first Filmfare Award.
