Heat

HEAT

TLW explore what keeps mammals warm in a frigid environment.

TLW describe heat as a flow of energy

TLW explain how temperature is measured.

TLW compare ways that heat is transferred.

TLW describe some of the effects heat has on matter.

What is heat

What is Heat?

  • The flow of energy from one material to another

  • Heat moves from warmer objects to cooler objects

    • Example: glass of ice warm in my hand

  • An insulator does not transfer heat well

    • Examples: glove, blubber of a whale, wood

  • A conductor transfers heat quickly

    • Example: frying pan

  • What is the relationship between heat and temperature?

  • What two scales are used to measure temperature?

  • How are they different?

How is heat transferred

How is Heat Transferred?

  • Conduction is the transfer of energy between two objects that are touching

    • Heat transferred from the coils to a metal pot

  • Convection is the transfer of energy by the flow of liquids or gases

    • Boiling water in a pot

    • Warm air rising in a room

  • Radiation is the transfer of energy through space

    • Heat from the sun reaches Earth by radiation

How does heat affect size

How Does Heat Affect Size?

  • Most matter expands, or gets larger, when heated

  • It contracts, or shrinks, when cooled

  • Examples of matter expanding and contracting

    • Thermometer

    • Expansion joints built between sections of the road

  • Balloon Demonstration

  • Workbook page 288

What are some sources of heat

What are Some Sources of Heat?

  • THE SUN

    • About 15 million C (27 million F) at its center

    • Where does it receive its energy?

    • How far away is the Sun from the Earth?

      • 93 million miles

  • FOSSIL FUELS

    • Formed millions of years ago from the remains of ancient plants and animals

    • Provides energy when it is burned

    • Coal, oil, and natural gas

    • Nonrenewable resources
