  1. MODULE 7: CONCEPT

  2. Unique events and happening inspire theme ideas. A good theme meets certain requirements. A relevant theme concept inspires content. Theme-related whole-book links expand coverage.

  3. A few words can set the tone for the theme and the store of the year. The overall theme concept spawns spin-off phrases.

  4. Copy gives the details that tie the concept to the book’s content. The style of the copy should fit the theme.

  5. Visual cool tools promote a unique and unified look. Photographs show the theme’s relevance. Typography sets the meaning, tone and style of a theme. Graphics and color add personality to the theme.

  6. COVER | One powerful word, “typical,” makes a bold theme statement.

  7. ENDSHEET | A forceful handwritten font and a color bar featuring five colors are introduced on the cover and endsheet.

  8. OPENING | Opening copy features “typical” students with their names highlighted in the colors of the sections.

  9. CLOSING | A black background is used to distinguish the opening/closing and dividers from the remainder of the yearbook.

  10. DIVIDER | The horizontal color bar becomes a vertical photo bar. The headlines and names appear in the section’s color.

  11. COVER | Square photos and the “element” graphic are introduced on the cover.

  12. ENDSHEET | The “Ws” element appears through a square opening on the cover, but is actually on the endsheet.

  13. OPENING | The first of two opening spreads, the element graphic on this spread appears very precise and organized.

  14. OPENING | A sketchiness appears as part of the “element” graphic on the second opening spread.

  15. CHRONLOGICAL SPREAD | A whole-look link runs across every spread and features an element for each student.

  16. COVER | Four black-and-white photos represent the yearbook’s four sections. The “life lessons” concept is not stated.

  17. ENDSHEET | Four becomes a subtle unifier with groups of four photographs visually accenting the contents listing.

  18. OPENING | There are four, color-coded opening spreads to represent each of the yearbook’s four seasonal sections.

  19. DIVIDER | Process-color background photos are displayed with cut-out background duotone photos.

  20. NOVELTY | Verbally reinforcing the “life lessons” concept, student responses finish one of four revealing sentences.
