  6. Step 2: Choose a Compatible e-Reader • E-book files come in many different formats, two of the most common formats for e-books are Adobe PDF and Adobe ePUB • The e-books available from the Pierce County Library through Overdrive are in either PDF or ePUB format • Compatible e-readers must be able to read PDF and ePUB files

  9. E-Readers • Pandigital Novel • Literati eReader

  10. ePUB vs PDF ePUB PDF • More files available to download from OverDrive • Best format for text. Has “reflowable text” – which means it can adjust to fit screen size and easily changes font size. • Less files available to download from OverDrive • Best format for pictures – perfect for cookbooks graphic novels, etc. • May have some text formatting issues on e-readers.

  11. Step 3: Get set up • Download and install Adobe Digital Editions on your home computer • Create an Adobe ID using the same email address that is associated with your e-reader • Activate Adobe Digital Editions with your Adobe ID

  12. Getting Set-up The Quick Start Guide on the OverDrive page covers: Downloading ADE Activating ADE with an Adobe ID ADE has already been installed and activated on the Learning Kit laptop

  13. Installing and Activating Adobe Digital Editions Why do I need to install Digital Editions? Why do I need to activate Digital Editions with an Adobe ID? • Converts files downloaded from library website into readable e-books. • Collects all your downloaded e-books in one place. • Helps you manage all of the items you have checked out. • Shows you how much time you have left for e-books checked out from the library. • Allows you to download and read eBooks on multiple computers • Allows you to transfer e-books to supported e-readers • You do have the option of anonymous activation (activating without an ID) however it only allows you to download and read e-books on a single computer only and will not allow you to transfer to an e-reader.

  14. Adobe Digital Editions

  15. Step 4: Find Books at Overdrive Digital Home • Accessing OverDrive Digital Home • Signing in to your Account • Finding E-Books • Adding items to your Cart or Wishlist

  26. So…what’s the deal with Kindle? • After months and months of anticipation OverDrive and Amazon’s Kindle are now compatible. The recent update allows most of our existing OverDrive eBooks to be read on all Kindle devices or by using free Kindle apps on iPhone, iPad, Android, and other mobile devices. At this point there are a small number of PDF titles that are not yet available for Kindle but OverDrive and Amazon are working to reduce this number.

  27. So…what’s the deal with Kindle? • When a user checks out a Kindle Book (same process as locating and checking out PDF & EPUB titles) through OverDrive, they will click a "Get for Kindle" button that will take them to Amazon’s website.

  28. So…what’s the deal with Kindle? Kindle users will need an Amazon account to access the library eBook in the Kindle format. Once signed in, the user will select which Kindle device or free Kindle app they want to deliver the title to for reading.

  29. So…what’s the deal with the iPad/iPhone? • You can use your iPhone/iPad/Android phone as an eReader • Rather than Adobe Digital Editions, these devices use OverDrive’s OverDrive Media Console app • Download the app through the App store or Android Marketplace directly to your mobile device • You will still need to activate the device with an Adobe ID • Search, check-out, and download eBooks directly to your device

  30. Find books using the OverDrive Media Console app With the app you can search, check-out, and download ebooks directly to your device • Open the OverDrive app on the iPod Touch • Select “Get Books+” • The first time you search for books you will need to add the PCLS website using a card number & PIN (the Learning Kit iPod has already added PCLS)

  31. Find books using the OverDrive Media Console app • When you select Pierce County Library System you will be taken to the PCLS OverDrive catalog • You can browse or search for both audiobooks and ebooks • You can add available titles to your cart or place requests for unavailable items • Enter a library card & PIN to check-out • You can read your ebook as soon as it is finished downloading to the OverDrive Media Console app
