  2. Overview • Working for Nutune Records. Involved in the promotion of a new band/musical act for their debut album and twelve date tour. Act need to create an image to appeal to an audience with an interest in an established music genre. Marketing materials should contribute to constructing a recognisable ‘brand’ for the act. Targets a largely youth-based market but wan to promote in a way that appeals to a select group of people that have a very unique interest in music (niche audience.) Act has some interest from Myspace and Facebook, but the record now wishes to use more mainstream marketing techniques to meet a bigger and more diverse target audience.

  3. Genre • Genre is a type or class. For example a genre of music could be rap. Or a genre of a film could be horror. Genre could also be referred to as a sort/kind/type/class.

  4. Potential Genres For My Product • Indie Rock - indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that originated in the United Kingdom and the United States in the 1980s, indie rock bands consist of The Kooks, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Wombats, etc. • Rap - rap music (hip-hop music) is a music genre consisting of rhythmic music that accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech. It developed as part of hip hop culture. Rap artists consist of people like Rick Ross, Eminem, and Mac Miller.

  5. Album covers/adverts Two Door Cinema Club This album cover shows a woman being sucked into the ceiling; all you can is the lower half of her body, probably to attract male attention (intended target audience.) The ceiling looks like a dress being blown up by the wind. The cover is like a dream sequence, implying that the album is too good to be true.

  6. Album covers/adverts The Wombats This shows peoples sitting, kneeling and standing at the seaside. The character in the image are holding pictures up to their faces, the image they are holding looks like a chair placed in a similar location as them.

  7. Album covers/adverts Lonsdale Boys Club This shows the members of the band in an urban location in retro clothing. The sky has been edited to look like water.

  8. Album covers/adverts Pegasus Bridge This shows a simple image of the band standing in front of a fence. They are all dressed casually. The name of the band is written in the sky above all of them. The image has been edited to give it a vintage look.

  9. Tour Date Adverts The Wombats This is the same image that is on the CD cover, the CD is also being advertised in the bottom right corner. It also has the date of when they are performing, when tickets are available and where to buy them from. It also says ‘all ages’ meaning they have a wide target audience or are trying to gain a wider audience.

  10. Tour Date Adverts This shows members have the band in front of a painting in the middle. Above this is the band name. Below the image of them is all the tour dates and below that is when tickets go on sale and when you can buy them. In the two bottom corners the album cover is being advertised.

  11. Tour Date Adverts Rick Ross This shows an image of the artist at the top with a a black and white brick wall behind him, he is also shrouded by smoke. Below is is name and the date of his performance.

  12. Record Companies • A record company is a company that makes and sells musical recordings. MTV HMV Maybach Music Odd Future Universal Music

  13. Recognisable Brands Westlife’srecognisable brand is the way they dress, they are usually dressed smartly. Odd Future’s recognisable brand is also the way they dress, they wear ‘hipster’ clothing, for example camouflage and hawaiian shirts. Slipknot’s recognisable brand is masks.

  14. Music Marketing Techniques • Merchandise – Selling band related products, such as clothing, accessories, and posters. • Touring – Having the band produce live shows in different towns/cities to gain more publicity and a wider audience. • Internet – The band can upload their music onto websites, produce a webpage for them band, and create a twitter/facebook/myspace/tumblr page for the band. • Advertising – Paying money to promote the band; putting up posters in public places.

  15. UK Top 40 – 18th November 2012 • These 10 songs are currently the most popular in the UK. Some of which are different genres of music, each of these songs will be targeted at a different audience.

  16. Artist Analysis; Mumford and Sons Mumford and sons are an indie rock/folk band. They produce music with instruments such as guitars, drums, bass guitar, keyboard, and traditional instruments used in folk music such as the banjo and the mandolin. They dress in smart casual clothing. In the image to the left they are in casual wear such as jeans and hats but they are also in smart clothing such as shirts, blazers, trousers and waistcoats. The clothing they wear is vintage/retro meaning it is quite old as is the music they sometimes produce (folk) so their image and music fits well together.

  17. Artist Analysis; Two Door Cinema Club Two door cinema club are another indie rock band that formed in 2007. The band consists of Sam Halliday (lead guitar, backing vocals), Alex Trimble (vocals, rhythm guitar, beats, synths) and Kevin Baird (bass, backing vocals). They dress in smart casual clothing. In the image to the left they are in casual wear such as jeans but they are also in smart clothing such as shirts, blazers, trousers and waistcoats. The clothing they wear is vintage/retro.

  18. Artist Analysis; Mac Miller Malcolm James McCormick was born on January 19, 1992. Also known as Mac Miller. He is an American rapper from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is signed to Rostrum Records. He dresses like typical rapper, chains, baggy clothing (sweatshirts, t-shirts, etc) and hats.
