The Supreme Court & Washington’s (1789-1797) Cabinet • Judiciary Act of 1789 est. the Supreme Court, • federal circuit & district courts • also allowed state court decisions to be appealed • to a federal court 1. Secretary of State (foreign affairs) – Thomas Jefferson 2. Secretary of Treasury (manage finances)– Alexander Hamilton 3. Secretary of War (military matters) – Henry Knox

  5. Hamilton: Federalist Strong fed. Gov’t Republic led by well-educated elite Loose interpretation Supported Nat’l bank Econ based on shipping & manufact. Supporters: Mostly Northerners- landowners, investors, lawyers Jefferson: Democratic- Republican St. & Fed. Gov’ts share pwr Democracy of virtuous farmers & traders Strict interpretation Nat’l Bank = unconstitutional Econ based on farming Supporters: Mostly Southerners- “plain people” (farmers, tradespeople) Jefferson vs. Hamilton… the beginning of political parties
