  1. FUNDS & EXPERTISE FOR R&D Des Foley GMIT Kevin Keane Chipright

  2. GMIT • 7,200 students • 5 Schools • Science • Engineering • Hotel • Business • Humanities • 5 Campuses • Highly practical, professionally orientated programmes • Delegated Authority (Level 9 taught and Level 10 selected areas) • 2 incubation /innovation centres

  3. RELEVANT ACTIVITIES

  4. CiSET Energy MFRC Marine and Freshwater GMEDTECH Medical Device HERITAGE SOFTWARE/APPS RESEARCH CENTRES AND EMERGING GROUPS

  5. CiSET 1. Application - Demand / Profile - Energy Management/Storage 2. Climate - Energy Content - Variability 3. Technology - Selection / Sizing - Integration / Optimisation • Focus: “…the integration of cost effective and reliable sustainable energy technologies ”

  6. MFRC CASE STUDY: Optimising survival of live shellfish for export to Asian markets Research Themes: Sustainability of fisheries & their ecosystems Conservation of marine & freshwater biodiversity Environmental toxicology Innovative technologies to optimise seafood production

  7. Case Study - Recirculating Aquaculture System

  8. GMedTech • Applied Biomedical Engineering Research • Clinically driven experimental haemodynamics research • To provide the best physiological models for optimising medical devices • Design and Development Support Services • Design and manufacture of patient specific compliant phantoms • Small and large arteries • Venous system • Simulation of physiological blood flow conditions (Fully controlled and monitored)

  9. EQUIPMENT AND CAPABILITIES

  10. SUMMARY CONTACT RESEARCH OFFICE ResearchOffice@gmit.ie 091-742761 • Highly Applied Research • Driven by Industry Need • How to engage with us • Innovation Voucher • Innovation Partnership • IRCSET Industry Partnership • EU Funding Partnering • Consultancy and Contract Services

  11. CHIPRIGHT • Company Background • Brief overview of what we do • The R&D item • Experience with Innovation vouchers

  12. CHIPRIGHT Chipright Irish Customers Micro-Chip Engineering Services R&D Enterprise Ireland GMIT European Customers

  13. CHIPRIGHT Chipright Focus on Verifying Digital Circuits Most Cost Effective point in Development Flow Verification Services (Chipright)

  14. CHIPRIGHT • Research Question: • Research new verification process for micro-chip development • Challenge for an indigenous company • Kick started research via Innovation voucher • Pre-cursor to our longer term view R&D Activity – Innovation partnership • Opportunity to evaluate “working relationship” with GMIT • Links to Engineering Department • Viewpoint of what is achievable when working with them • Viewpoint of their courses, strong skills to identify in graduates • Opportunity to build connections & relationships with GMIT

  15. CHIPRIGHT • How did it work out? • Identify a research partner and “agree up front on a goal” for the research • We had to “ramp-up” the researcher and inject ideas into the process • Streamlined it to “narrow” what we wanted solved • Researcher worked on the process • Continuous email / communication • Gave us a degree of control over it • Report generated

  16. CHIPRIGHT • Identified a good level of software knowledge within Engineering Dept. • Software like JAVA • Can be used to develop graphical user interfaces • Identified this as something to leverage after the core research was implemented • Different topic entirely to what we looked at originally • So used the Innovation voucher a 2nd time
