  1. Putting it together with FRACTIONS Michele Webb

  2. Introduction • Fractions! What are they? Why do we have to know how to use them? • In this lesson you will learn why fractions are important in everyday life. You will also learn about different occupations that depend on the use of fractions. • Find any relevant background and interest of the audience. • Practice simple calculations with fractions.

  3. Agenda 9:00-9:05 What are fractions? 9:05-9:20 Why do we need fractions in everyday life? 9:20-9:30 Occupations that use fractions 9:30-9:40 Class discussion on previous work with fractions in and out of the classroom. 9:40-10:00 Practice fraction calculations

  4. What are fractions? • Parts of a whole? • Numbers less than 1? • Fractions are ways to “divide up”a whole number. • Essential part of mathematics • How do we add and subtract these things called fractions? • How do we multiply and divide these things called fractions?

  5. Why on Earth do we need these things called fractions? • What are some things people do each day that requires the use of fractions? • What are some jobs that need fractions? • Has anyone used fractions before in a job? • Do you feel comfortable using fractions? Are there any specific reasons why or why not?

  6. Topic One- Adding and Subtracting Fractions • Explain details • Give an example • Exercise to re-enforce learning Examples: 1/3 + 2/3 = 3/3 = 1 4/5 + 6/5 = 10/5 = 2 2/3 – 3/5 = 10/15 – 9/15 = 1/15 1/6 + 3/12 = 2/12 + 3/12 = 5/15

  7. Topic Two-Multiplying and Dividing Fractions • Explain details • Give an example • Exercise to re-enforce learning Examples: 2/3 * 3/2 = 6/6 = 1 ¾ * 2/4 = (3 * 2) / (4*4) = 6/16 = 3/8 (1/5) / (1/2) = (1/5) * (2/1) = 2/5 ¾ / ½ = ¾ * 2/1 = 6/4 = 3/2 = 1 ½

  8. Summary • We have learned about ways fractions are used in everyday life by people of all different types of situations. • We have discussed and practiced how to do simple calculations with fractions.
