  14. Questions / Comments

  15. THIS DAY IN AVIATION • August 28 • 1908 — The United States Army accepts its first dirigible. • It is 96 feet long, with a 20-hp Curtiss engine.

  16. THIS DAY IN AVIATION • August 28 • 1923 — A New World refueled flight duration record of 37 hours 15 minutes 4.8 seconds set.

  17. THIS DAY IN AVIATION • August 28 • 1957 — A record altitude for manned aircraft is achieved by the RAF Canberra serial no. WK 163 piloted by chief test pilot M. Randrup. • He flies the aircraft to 70,310 ft. with the aid of a Double Scorpion rocket motor.

  18. Aircraft in Motion

  19. Today’s Mission Requirements • Mission: • Identify the flight control surfaces of an aircraft. • Describe the effects of the flight control surfaces on aircraft flight. • EQ: How do the flight control surfaces effect the actions of aircraft flight?

  20. Aircraft in Flight

  21. Flight Control Surfaces

  22. Ailerons • Are hinged, horizontal surfaces attached to the back (trailing edge), outer edges of the wings of the plane. • Used to turn the plane. (ROLL) – Longitudinal Axis • As one aileron rises, the opposite aileron lowers, raising one wing and lowering the other, tilting (or banking) the plane toward the lower aileron.

  23. Elevators • Are hinged, horizontal surfaces attached to the trailing edge of the horizontal stabilizer. • Control the plane’s movement upward or downward. (PITCH) – Lateral Axis • When the elevators are raised, the tail is forced downward, the wings are forced upward, and the plane climbs.

  24. Rudder • A hinged, vertical surface attached to the trailing edge of the vertical stabilizer (tail of the plane). • Helps the plane enter and recover from turns by swinging the tail to the left or right. (YAW) – Vertical Axis
