  2. Promoting Protection through Pride –Turns a Charismatic Species into a Symbol of Local Pride - to improve Public Understanding of the Value of Biodiversity • Combination of Grassroots andMass-marketing techniques • Generate Support, Enthusiasm and Participation – for Ecosystem Protection

  3. RARE Training Opportunity • RARE has one fully-funded place open specifically a project in the Western Pacific, beginning in January 2004. • I would like to invite interested agencies and candidates to apply for this place by 15th October • Additional opportunities……

Tested in more than 30 countries • Support Conservation of Species • Increase Community Participation in Sustainable Practices • Build Capacity for NGO’s • Support Creation of Protected Areas • Increase support for Conservation Action • Help passage of new Natural Resource Management Legislation

  5. Specific Threats Addressed • The campaign objectives, target species and target audiences are carefully selected in order to address a specific and measurable threat

  6. Promoting Protection through Pride – Step by Step • Formal University training for a local educator • Participatory site assessment • Campaign design • Campaign implementation • Technical assistance and monitoring • Evaluation and follow-up

  7. University Training Modules • 1.Methods of Study: Locating and using environmental information in the electronic age • 2.Introduction to Biodiversity • 3.Social Science Approaches to Environmental Understanding • 4.Ecology of Habitats & Populations • 5.Conservation and the Law • 6. The Marketing and Economics of Conservation

  8. Reaching out Every segment of the target audience is reached: • School Children and Teachers • Local Government • Law Enforcement Officials • Clergy • Local Media • Resource User Groups (e.g. farmers, fishermen etc) • Women’s groups, Teenagers, young Adults

  9. Candidates typical background: • The equivalent of a high school diploma • Live within or be very familiar with the communities that the campaign will target • 3 years work experience in conservation/ education • Demonstrate a long-term commitment to working in local conservation education • Possess a sufficient level of written and spoken English for the training course in England, and Spanish for Mexico
