History Advantages and Disadvantages of lasik Eye Surgery

LASIK is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. In LASIK, a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser.

  3. History Dr. Steven Trokel introduced Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK). He also patented the Excimer laser for vision correction and performed the first laser surgery on a patient's eyes in 1987. In 1996, the first Excimer laser for ophthalmic refractive use was approved in the United States.

  4. What is Laser Surgery For Eyes ? LASIK is a surgical procedure that uses a laser to correct near-sightedness, farsightedness, and/or astigmatism. In LASIK, a thin flap in the cornea is created using either a microkeratome blade or a femtosecond laser. The surgeon folds back the flap, then removes some corneal tissue underneath using an excimer laser.

  5. How Is LASIK Surgery Performed First, your eye surgeon uses either a mechanical surgical tool called a microkeratome or a femtosecond laser to create a thin, circular "flap" in the cornea. The surgeon then folds back the hinged flap to access the underlying cornea (called the stroma) and removes some corneal tissue using an excimer laser. For near-sighted people, the goal is to flatten the cornea; with farsighted people, a steeper cornea is desired. Laser eye surgery requires only topical anesthetic drops, and no bandages or stitches are required.

  6. Advantage The LASIK technique takes less than 30 minutes to perform and is very effective The technical advancements incorporated in the LASIK technique eliminates the clinically significant risks leading to visual impairment after a refractive surgery. Most surveys show that 92-98% of people who undergo the surgery are satisfied. With the results

  7. Disadvantages The LASIK surgery, done on the most sensitive part of the eye and is not reversible Even after a LASIK surgery, a person may require reading glasses during midlife. The surgery is usually not covered by insurance policies. Additional surgery or ' enhancement' may be required to enjoy the best possible result of a LASIK.

  8. Long-Term Results Laser eye surgery offers numerous benefits and can dramatically improve your quality of life. Most people achieve 20/20 vision or better after the surgery, but LASIK results do vary. Some people may achieve only 20/40 vision or less. You may still need to wear glasses or contact lenses following laser vision correction, though your prescription level typically will be much lower than before. A small percentage of people will need a LASIK enhancement, or "touch up" procedure, a few months after the primary LASIK surgery to achieve acceptable visual acuity.
