  3. The Book of Exodus is AWESOME! • Second book of the Bible and is vital for understanding the Torah (5 Books of the Law) • Holds much of the historical background of Israel • Provides framework for understanding God in the Old Testament and how He works in the New Testament • Clearly a continuation of the Genesis story • If Genesis is the Bible’s “Table of Contents,” then Exodus is the “Introduction to the Main Character,” that is, God. • Exodus can be viewed as the Bible’s “Intro to God.”

  4. Portrayal of God in Exodus • God hears the cries of his people the Israelites • The God who created leads Israel out of Egypt • God desires to be with his people • God is life-giving, life-preserving, life-blessing (Ex. 1:7)

  5. Genesis Exodus Begins with all of the Israelites in view Begins with all of humanity in view Eventually focuses upon one man ― Abraham & his family Eventually focuses upon one man ― Moses & his family Abraham has two siblings ― Nahor and Haran Moses has two siblings ― Aaron and Miriam He is called to leave his home and travel to a foreign land He is forced to flee his home and travel to a foreign land

  6. New Testament CROSS Old Testament EXODUS

  7. Facts about Exodus • Author – Moses • Main characters – God, Moses, Israelites • Main theme – Redemption (Deliverance) • Book name – Exodus (meaning “way out”) • Simple outline: • Redemption from Egypt (Chs. 1-18) • Revelation from God (Chs. 19-40)

  8. The God who Hears Exo 2:23-25 (CEV) After the death of the king of Egypt, the Israelites still complained because they were forced to be slaves. They cried out for help, and God heard their loud cries. He did not forget the promise he had made to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and because he knew what was happening to his people, he felt sorry for them.

  9. The God who Hears Exo 6:5-6 Now I have seen how the people of Israel are suffering because of the Egyptians, and I will keep my promise. Here is my message for Israel: "I am the LORD! And with my mighty power I will punish the Egyptians and free you from slavery.

  10. God hears… • Because of His perfect character • Even though we may forget • Even when we go through suffering • And justice will be served
