  1. 6 th JTF Meeting – 30 October – 01 November 2012, Geneva Seminar on Water Statistics in Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia Countries

  2. Location: Almaty, Kazakhstan Date : 11-13 September 2012

  3. Aim • This two-day workshop organized by the Eurostat jointly with EEA which main aim was: • The seminar is addressed to the National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) and the national authorities (Ministries, Agencies) dealing with water in the countries of Eastern Europe, South Caucasus and Central Asia • The Seminar focused on the exchange of good practice in the provision of statistics for water management and governance of the water sector. • Reliable, complete and timely statistics are essential tools for those involved in planning sustainable water supply, consumption and treatment.

  4. Main Issues on discussion floor • In particular, Workshop discussed practical techniques and challenges in producing statistical data and indicators on • Water Resources, • Water abstraction and use, • Water exploitation index, • Wastewater collection and treatment • facilitating sustainable data flows

  5. Outputs • It was noticed that most of participating countries do have data sets and data bases which can be used for indicator production in water area. • In particular, among countries, “water abstraction and use” was one of the indicators which seems appropriate to use in regional context for assessment. • Sharing data and information with international organisations (such as EEA, Eurostat, UNECE, FAO etc.), data reliability and accuracy as well as ensuring the effective cooperation between countries for data sharing and indicator development still remain to be improved. • The EEA and UNECE presence at the meeting was beneficial in order to link such event to more sustainable and systematic processes.

  6. Outputs It appeared that one of the key support to be provided within the regional context is sharing of experience and best practices on water management practices and water statistics including data collection methodologies and setting-up of appropriate information systems underpinned by examples relevant to this region
