He hoped that the amount of land available would prevent Americans from crowding into cities. • B) • The Whiskey Rebellion showed that the government had power and that it will enforce its laws. • D) • The Monroe Doctrine closed America to further colonization, promised the U.S. would stay out of European affairs, and shows that the U.S. saw itself as a world power and protector of Latin America.

  25. The Midwest grew food for Northeast factory workers, and became market for northeastern manufactured goods. The Northeast were consumers of Midwest farming products, and growth in textile mills increased demand for southern cotton. The South increased cotton demand from northeastern factories led to the expansion of slavery in the south. • (Any two of these four) It triggered a vast westward movement, planters grew more cotton rather than other goods, more Native American groups were driven off Southern land, and growing cotton required a large work force that slavery provided. • To make it through the hardships of their daily lives • American patriotism increased, Native American resistance weakened, and U.S. manufacturing grew immensely. • The Missouri Compromise kept the balance of power between the free and slave states in the Senate. • In the south, slaves had to work long hours in dangerous and treacherous conditions on large plantations with white overseers. In the north, slaves would work as domestic servants, skilled craftsmen, factory-hands, and day laborers. They were allowed to keep part of their earning. • Interchangeable parts speeded up production, made repairs easy, and allowed less skilled workers to enter the market.
