  1. Napoleon’s Successes & Failures • Napoleon went on to conquer most of Europe, everyone except England. Napoleon lost to England’s navy at the battle of Trafalgar. (destroyed France’s navy and eliminated the possibility of invading England)

  2. Napoleon Master of Europe • Napoleon became the master of Europe. Napoleon put his brothers and his in-laws in power in different countries. (this will lead to Nationalism)

  3. Napoleon’s Failures “Ise hope I do not blow dis” • While Napoleon controlled most of Europe, he would make three costly mistakes that would lead to his down fall. “Uh-uh-uh, zings are going so good right now”

  4. Napoleon and England • 1) Attempt to destroy England. Napoleon will set up a blockade (using the navy to stop trade and close ports). His blockade will be called the Continental System.

  5. The Continental System • The Continental System was supposed to stop England from trading with all European countries. But England’s navy was bigger and better than Napoleon’s and other countries, including some of Napoleon’s own family members were secretly trading with England. So the blockade actually hurt France more than England.

  6. Napoleon in Spain • Napoleon’s invasion of Spain (Nationalism). Napoleon marched through Spain to get to Portugal (not following the Continental System) the Spanish king did not like Napoleon in his land, so Napoleon removed the king and made his brother the king. “Uh-uh-uh, No you wills gets out” “Hey get out of my land” “Uh-uh-uh, thanks for zee job mis brother”

  7. Spain Fights Back • The Spanish peasants were loyal to their king, and attacked Napoleon’s army with hit-and run tactics. 300,000 French soldiers were lost, this weakened Napoleon’s army.

  8. Napoleon invades Russia • 3) Invasion of Russia. Napoleon and his troops invaded Russia (422,000 soldiers). As the Russian army retreated they used the scorched-earth policy, they burned and destroyed the land as they retreated. Why? So Napoleon’s army had no food or supplies to use as they followed the Russian army.

  9. Russian Winter Dooms Napoleon • It was late winter, and Napoleon was marching his way to the capital of Russia, Moscow. The Russian troops left Moscow, but first they burned the city to the ground. Leaving Napoleon no place to stay and no supplies. His army began to freeze to death.

  10. Return to France • As they marched back to France, the Russians attacked the rear of Napoleon’s army. When he returned to France he had only 10,000 left to fight. (lost 410,000 soldiers!)

  11. Exiled to Elba • A defeated Napoleon is defeated and exiled the island of Elba. • He will make on last attempted return to power, but his new French army is defeated at the battle of Waterloo. He is exiled again, six years later he died.
