  1. 22nd September 2014Tone/ Atmosphere/ Techniques • How does Dahl uses techniques to create an engaging opening. • Look at the tone and/or atmosphere created. • Can you predict what will happen? Who is the villain?

  2. Pick out the key words. What sort of words are these? What atmosphere is being created? The room was warm and clean…two table lamps alight without anxiety, merely to please herself slow smiling air about her The drop of a head as she bent over her sewing was curiously tranquil the mouth was soft, and the eyes, with their new placid look this was always a blissful time of day was content to sit quietly, enjoying his company warm male glow

  3. Pick out the key words. What sort of words are these? What atmosphere is being created?   5. Now look for clues that all may not be as it seems? Pick out the key words. • two table lamps alight-hers and the one by the empty chair opposite. • two tall glasses…a strongish one for him, a weak one for herself • with their new placid look, seemed larger darker than before. • car door slamming • For her, this was always a blissful time of day • She knew he didn't want to speak much until the first drink was finished • And she, on her side • he did an unusual thing

  7. Write out a PEE paragraph telling me what sort of atmosphere Dahl is trying to create at the beginning of thisshort story and show me evidence. Don’t forget to explain the effect of key words.

  8. PLENARY: • Look at your partner’s work. • Have they made a clear point? • Have they supported it with evidence? • Have they used quote marks? • Have they picked out key words/techniques? • Have they explained the effect of these?

  9. HOMEWORK By Friday 26th Sept. Write out a PEE paragraph telling me what clues Dahl gives to hint that things may not be all that they seem.Don’t forget, explain your evidence.
