  1. Reaction Type and predicting Products Quick Review on Important Ideas

  2. 5 types we need to know and recognize Synthesis Decomposition Combustion Single Replacement Double replacement

  3. Combustion When Oxygen (O2) is a reactant • With a Hydrocarbon Products ALWAYS: → H2O + CO2 2. With a Metal Product: Metal Oxide Ex: Mg + O2 → MgO

  4. Decomposition When only 1 reactant USE DECOMPOSITION RULES Products for: NaCO3 → Fe(OH)3 → KBr → Na2O + CO2 Rule #3 Fe2O3 + H2O Rule #2 K + Br2 Rule #1

  5. Single Replacement Use Activity Series Al + NiBr2 → Al + NiBr2 → Al is Higher so it kicks out Ni producing Ni + AlBr3

  6. Single Replacement Use Activity Series Cl2 + NiBr2 → Cl2 + NiBr2 → Cl is Higher so it kicks out Brproducing Br2 + NiCl2

  7. Single Replacement However: Zn + NaOH → Zn + NaOH → Na is higher than Zn so… NO REACTION OCCURS

  8. Final point… Spontaneous? Or not? Exothermic? Or … Endothermic?

  9. All Are Spontaneous and Exothermic EXCEPT... • Decomposition … it is opposite • Double-Replacement • … it IS spontaneous… but neither endo / exo • If No Reaction occurs… then nothing.
