Purpose of bathing • Remove transient microorganism , body secretion and excretion , and dead skin cells • Stimulate circulation to the skin • Produce a sense of well being • Promote relaxation and comfort • Prevent or eliminate unpleasant body odors • Good chance for the nurse to carry skin assessment Ahdab Eskandar 2010-1431 fundamenals of nursing

  12. Complete bed bath • The nurse washes the entire body of dependent client in bed Self helped bed bath • Clients confined to bed are able to bath themselves with help from the nurse washing the back and perhaps the feet Ahdab Eskandar 2010-1431 fundamenals of nursing

  14. Partial bath • called also( abbreviated bath )only the parts of the clients body that might cause discomfort or odor ,if neglected are washed: (face , hands , axilla , perinea area and back.) Ahdab Eskandar 2010-1431 fundamenals of nursing

  15. Tube bath • often preferred on bed bath and Sponge bath (why)? Temperatures: Between 38-46C • can be used as therapeutic baths by adding medication and immersing body parts Ahdab Eskandar 2010-1431 fundamenals of nursing

  16. Towel bath • In bed bath that use a quick drying solution containing disinfectant ,a cleaning and softening agents mixed with water(43-48C) . Bag bath is an adaptation of this type. shower • It is for ambulatory client who are able to use the shower facilities and require minimal assistance from nurse. Bathing an adult client • Assessment : • Condition of skin( color, texture & lesion etc.) • Fatigue • Presence of pain • Range of motion of the joints • Any other aspect of health that may affect client bathing • Need for using clean gloves during bath Ahdab Eskandar 2010-1431 fundamenals of nursing

  24. Making bath mitt • Triangular: • Lay your hand on the wash cloth. • Fold the top corner over your hand. • Fold the side corner over your hand. • Tuck the second corner under the cloth on palm side to secure the mitt. Ahdab Eskandar 2010-1431 fundamenals of nursing

Bathing an adult client • Preparation • Performance: • Explain to client what you are going to do • Wash hands • Provide privacy • Prepare client and environment • Close door and windows • Ask client if he/she want to void • Encourage self care if possible • Invite family member to help Ahdab Eskandar 2010-1431 fundamenals of nursing

Bathing an adult client • For bed bath: • Prepare client and position client appropriately (promote good body mechanics) • Make bath mitt with washcloths ( triangular or rectangular method) • Wash the face ( wash eye from inner to outer ) • Wash arms and hands (firm strokes from distal to proximal area ) & ( pay attention to space between fingers) Ahdab Eskandar 2010-1431 fundamenals of nursing

Bathing an adult client • For tube bath or shower: • Prepare client and tube (fill tube to appropriate level and check the water temperature) • Assist client into shower or tube (taking a standing shower or sitting on chair) &(insure patient safety before leaving the toilet) Ahdab Eskandar 2010-1431 fundamenals of nursing
