  3. Disability Consultative Forum • Set up in 1996 • Transfer of DPMA from HBs to DSFA • Used as a sounding board for issues surrounding the transfer. • Decided to retain Forum and meet on a quarterly basis • Run by Project Office in Longford SWSO

  4. Disability Consultative Forum Whose On It Representatives from principal organisations representing people with disabilities and service providers. National Disability Authority(NDA), Inclusion Ireland(II), Disability Federation Ireland(DFI), Irish Wheelchair Association(IWA), Mental Health Ireland(MHI), Federation of Voluntary Bodies(FVI), People with Disabilities IrelandPWDI), Not For Profit Business Association (NFPBA), HSE , Comhairle- now Citizens Information Board. Dept Reps Longford SWSO (Chair and Secretary), Planning, Others as req’d.

  5. Disability Consultative Forum What it does 1. Channel of Communication between Disability organisations and Dept. 2. Mechanism to review and make recommendations which can input into policy making. 3. Opportunity for Dept to give an update on relevent topical issues. 4. Opportunity for Groups to raise issues

Disability Consultative Forum Issues that have been discussed Transfer of DPMA Implementation of improvements to income support payments in successive SW Acts Liaison with FAS, DETE, NDA and other statutory bodies Information Service issues- design of forms and leaflets and ensuring accessible mediums are available Medical Assessment Procedures Alternative payment methods Access to Offices.

Disability Consultative Forum Benefits • Improvement in delivery of services to People with disabilities. • Dept. appreciation of issued faced. • Direct mechanism for consultation • Assisted in introduction of Disability Awareness training for staff. • Highlighted cross Dept and inter-agency issues. • Improved our dissemination of information to public. • Provided a formal network for organisations to communicate their views and have an input into policy.

  8. Disability Consultative Forum Conclusion Its success has meant that the structure is now being used for formal monitoring of Disability Sectoral Plan and other Depts are being asked to replicate structure. The Social Partners are parading it as the model for monitoring progress on a range of issues.
