What is the Story of Muhammad? • Orphaned at the age of six, Muhammad was raised by his grandfather and uncle • At the age of 25 he married a wealthy businesswoman of about 40 named Khadijah • At the age of 40 Muhammad’s life was changed overnight when the angel Gabriel told him that he was a messenger of Allah (God) • By 613 C.E he began preaching in public • He was forced to leave Mecca in 622 • By 630 he and 10,000 followers marched to Mecca and Mecca’s leaders surrendered

What are the Five Pillars of Islam? • Faith • “There is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.” • Every Muslim must testify to this • Prayer • Five times a day, Muslims face toward Mecca to pray • Usually at a mosque (Islamic house of worship) • Alms • Muhammad taught that all Muslims have a responsibility to support the less fortunate • A special religious tax giving money to the poor • Fasting • Muslims fast between dawn and sunset during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan • Pilgrimage • All Muslims who are physically and financiallyable, perform a pilgrimage to Mecca known as the hajj

What are the “links” of Islam to Christianity • To Muslims, Allah is the same God that is worshiped in Christianity • Muslims view Jesus as a prophet, not as the son of God • They believe the Qur’an is the word of Allah just as Christians believe the Gospels were revealed to Moses and New Testament writers • Both religions believe in • Heaven • Hell • Judgmentday • Holy Book • Both trace ancestry to Abraham • Are all people of the book
