  1. Getting College Students BACC on track: Behavioral Academic Career Counseling Senior System Manager: Dan Shafto Junior System Manager: Tamina Stuber Undergraduate Assistant: Lisa LeVasseur Advisor: Dr. Richard Malott

  2. What is BACC? • Behavioral Academic and Career Counseling • A supplemental undergraduate advisory program • Supervised by Richard Malott, PhD. • Managed by BATS (Behavior Analysis Training System) MA students

  3. BACC Mission Statement • BACC provides essential guidance to undergraduate psychology students • Through one-on-one counseling interviews with BATS’ MA students • To help the undergraduate students have a better chance at accomplishing their post-graduation goals.

  4. So What’s The Problem? • Is there a lack of traditional counseling? • Do undergraduate students not seek out the essential information they need to make decisions about their academic/career goals because they are lazy? • Or is it pure EVIL itself…

  5. PROCRASTINATION!

  6. The Solution • One-on-one counseling • Knowledgeable counselors • Performance contracting • Follow-up appointments

  7. Who’s involved? • Master’s students from Dr. Malott’s BATS program I HAD A BACC APPT. WHEN I WAS AN UNDERGRAD! ME TOO!! IT REALLY HELPED.. IN FACT WE ALL WERE SET ON TRACK BY BACC

  8. We recruit undergraduate psychology studentsfrom: Dr. Malott’s Psy 360,460 and 100 Honors andOther psychology courses

  9. The BACC Interview • The MA student gathers information from undergraduates using the “How to Achieve Your Goals” form.

  10. Be sure to bring this form filled out to your BACC appointment!

  11. The Interview Cont. • The MA student advises undergraduates about: • What classes to take • How to raise their GPA • Practicum opportunities • How to get research experience • How to get into Graduate School • Employment opportunities

  12. The Interview Cont. • We also have several Graduate school binders and job binders in which students can gather additional information about the various fields of psychology • Clinical psychology • Counseling psychology • Industrial Organizational psychology • Organizational Behavior Management • Behavior Analysis • Health psychology • Forensic psychology • With more coming soon to a BATS lab near you!

  13. The Interview cont. • After the undergraduate has decided on some goal(s), • such as scheduling to take the GRE or spending more time studying, • The MA student will fill out a performance contract with the undergraduate

  14. The undergraduate leaves the interview with a plan of action and the information to make decisions about their future.

  15. And then what? • We try to get the students back for a follow-up appointment to assess where they are in terms of reaching their goals.

  16. Evaluation • Recently, undergraduate students evaluated the three parts of the BACC interview: • Academic Review • Career Information • Goal-Setting • On accuracy, clarity, and performance

  17. Sample of Academic Review feedback from Fall 2002 BACC appointments Fall 2001

  18. Sample of Career Information feedback from Fall 2002 BACC appointments Fall 2001

  19. Overall rating of BACC appointments from Fall 2002 students If I hadn’t had a BACC appointment, I’d be living in a van down by the river!

  20. Evaluation cont. • As you can see, most undergraduates enjoyed their BACC appointment and found it useful. • So, sign up for a BACC appointment and “get BACC on track!”

  21. There is a lot of information you need to stay on top of…… • GRE • Graduate Programs • Classes to take • Licensure Information • Practica • Research Opportunities • Jobs while you are in school

  22. Why not let BACC help you out? Remember if you find that you cannot make your appointment please let your TA know as soon as possible! If you fail to do so and do not show up you will lose points.  We’ll give you 20 participation points for coming to the appointment. 10 OAP’s for showing proof that you’ve completed the task in the performance contract. Plus each additional task you complete related to your career/academic goals will also be worth 10 more OAP’s!!!  It’s the cool thing to do!!

  23. Your TA will pass around a sign-up sheet, • So make your BACC appointment now… • And get “BACC” on track
