Background • 2003—Fair Weather Report (NRC) “The NWS [National Weather Service] should establish an independent advisory committee to provide ongoing advice to it on weather and climate matters…” • 2004—NOAA Policy on Partnerships in the Provision of Environmental Information • 2006—NOAA SAB recommended an ad hoc, limited duration working group to examine improving communications with public, private, and academic entities • 2008—Ad hoc working group recommended that the NOAA SAB create EISWG to address environmental information services across NOAA • 2009—First EISWG meeting held November 18-20 NOAA SAB—EISWG (January 2010)

The Charge • To provide advice on improving communication among the sectors • To provide advice on incorporating scientific and technical capabilities to enhance NOAA products and services • Provide a sounding board on NOAA’s Policy on Partnerships in the Provision of Environmental Information • Evaluate NOAA effectiveness in responding to advice received from EISWG, and the environmental information enterprise as a whole; • Evaluate after two years, whether the working group is an effective mechanism for working with external partners or whether other mechanisms should be considered NOAA SAB—EISWG (January 2010)

EISWG I • First Meeting held in Silver Spring, Maryland, November 18-20 • Excellent program and participation on behalf of NOAA Senior Staff • Group identified information needed in order to better determine work plan • Group identified key actions and issues to address over the next six months • Agreement to serve as a “community listening post” and open to feedback from all corners NOAA SAB—EISWG (January 2010)

Next Steps • Obtain more information • Engage with the broad community (beginning with AMS 2010) • Organize next EISWG meeting—April 2010 • Begin to determine priorities for the work plan • Ensure that the EISWG is complementing other, ongoing WG efforts (e.g., climate) NOAA SAB—EISWG (January 2010)
