  2. Bellringer 9/23/13- Answer the following questions in your notebook: Think about the main character, Johnny… • What is causing the conflict in the story? • How does the main character change and what causes this change? • What happens at the end of the story and what causes that to happen?

  3. Determining THE MEssage What topics come up in this story? From these topics, what message is the author trying to send? (Think about writing to: persuade, inform, entertain, or express thoughts/opinions/emotions)

  4. Determining THE MEssage • Choose one topic from the board. • Determine how the reader is being persuaded based on the topic you chose. • Now, write a theme using this information!

  5. Supporting Your Theme • Now that you’ve chosen a theme, let’s take a look at how it develops throughout the text.

  6. Bellringer- 9/24/13 Read the quote and determine the meaning of the underlined word using context clues. “Would you like to visit him? He has a holiday in a few days.” “Mama said that Dad’s gone away forever!” Johnny stared at her incredulously. “He has a holiday?”
