  4. successes 3. British Out of Egypt A. The British occupied Egypt so they could have access to supplies like oil and coal. Britain prevented development of Egyptian army B. The British influence was corrupting land, and they were occupying the regime C. Nasser was the leader of the Free Officers Organization that helped to overthrow the British D. After Nasser became president, the western nations refused to sell him military equipment, because they did not want him to become too powerful Specific evidence: Successes: 1. Distributed Wealth A. Took land from rich land owners and distributed it among others B. Personal success: Nasser was born into a middle class family and was provided basic needs throughout his childhood; however, he saw people who were suffering and wanted to make a difference. C. Nasser helped a lot of people; promoted individualism, and wanted people to be independent, and able to produce their own food, work for themselves, and provide for themselves D. The U.S. thought this resembled communism and kept him on close watch 2. Nationalized Suez Canal A. U.S. and U.K. withdrew money to build Aswan High Dam. Nasser responded by nationalizing the Suez Canal. B. the nationalization of the canal causes an Israeli invasion of the Sinai peninsula and an Anglo- French invasion of the canal zone C. the UN orders the Suez Canal to be returned to Egypt D. This was considered a large accomplishment, because Egypt won the support of the UN

Failures • 3.UAR ( United Arab Republic) failure • A. sovereign union between Egypt, and Syria B. the union did not last long, because Syria withdrew from the union, and soon after the republic dissolved ( Egypt was still called the United Arab Republic until 1971) C. Western nations did not like this union because they did not want all of the Arab nations to unify and become powerful • Failures: • 1. Six Day War A. Israel attacked Egypt in 1967 because they wanted to be able to use the Suez Canal B. The Egyptians suffered an utter defeat ; they lost a fair amount of soldiers C. Nasser resigned after the loss • 2. Egypt dependent on Soviet Union A. Nasser made Egypt dependent on military and economic aid from Soviet Union B. Soviet Union provided support, by means of money and labor to build a dam for the Suez Canal C. Egypt became very prosperous from a previously poverty- stricken country D. Western nations did not want Egypt to be business partners with the Soviet Union because they were communists and the us did not want them to make Egypt communists as well

Introduction • my intro sentence ex. • Nasser, during his reign in Egypt, experienced numerous successes and failures of his policies. • Nasser experienced many personal successes, such as distributing the wealth of Egypt, getting the British out of Egypt, and nationalizing the Suez canal; however he also experienced failure of the UAR ( United Arab Republic), suffered defeat from the six day war, and became dependant on the soviet union.

  7. Conclusion: • State the effects of Nassers’ policies • What is his legacy in Egypt, how do the people feel about him now • I would write: • Nasser experienced several successes, and failures during his reign, and remains a revered idol in Egypt, even today his legacy never faltered.
