  5. FAMILY What is family? A group of people that share a common bond Tell me about your family…. 5 min.

  6. NEIGHBORHOOD What is a neighborhood? When many families live near each other in an area. Describe your neighborhood…. What types of things do you do in your neighborhood? 5 min.

  7. Activity – Picture Book Step 1 - Read the book aloud as a class. What did you like best? Which of these jobs do you do? What is missing from your book? 20 min.

  8. Activity – Picture Book Step 2 • Read each page • Find who is working on the poster • Find the sticker that matches who is working • Pull the sticker off the sheet and put it on the page • Fill in the blank at the bottom of each page

  9. What did you learn? Who makes our neighborhood a good place to live? How do helpful neighbors make you feel? Draw a picture (p. 8) 5 min.

  12. Review • Looking at our poster, what makes a neighborhood a nice place to live? • How can you and your family make your neighborhood a nice place to live? 5 min.

  13. NEED What is a need? Something families must have to live. • Food • Clothing • Shelter

  14. WANT What is a want? Something families would like to have.

  15. MONEY What is money? Something used to pay for things we need and want.

  16. Activity – Picture Cards Part 1 • Put both flash cards face up • Watch and listen • Hold up the flash card you think describes the picture • Keep flash card in the air 20 min.

  17. Activity – Picture Cards Part 2 Drop me a note • Fill in the blanks to write a note to a family member • Ask them to fulfill a need or a want • Offer to do a job for that person in return

  19. DIPLOMA What is a diploma? An official paper or certificate that is awarded to students who work hard and graduate school. How many of you would like to have a diploma someday?

  24. BUSINESS What is a business? Places that sell the goods and services we need or want. Can you give me an example? 20 min.

  25. ENTREPRENEUR What is an entrepreneur? People who start businesses and create jobs in neighborhoods.

Activity – Guessing Game Part 1 • Student volunteer will stand at the front of class • I will show only the class a picture of someone doing a job • Look at the picture but do not speak yet. • The class will offer 3 clues to our student volunteer • Please raise your hand if you would like to offer a clue. • Our student volunteer will guess the job after 3 clues. 20 min.

  30. Review What is a job? Work that needs to be done. What is a business? Places that sell the goods and services we need or want. What is an entrepreneur? People who start businesses and create jobs in neighborhoods. Why are businesses important to our neighborhoods?

  31. Review What is a need? Something families need to live. What is a want? Something families would like to have. Where can families go to get their needs and wants met?

  32. Activity – Floor Map What is a map? A drawing that helps you find your way around. What is a symbol? A sign used instead of a word. What is a key? A list that helps you find your way around.

  33. Activity – Floor Map Step 1 Work with map as a class to identify symbols • What is this place? • What does this business provide? • Does this place provide a need or a want? • Do you see any symbols like this in your community?

  34. Activity – Floor Map Step 2 What is a good? Things that can be bought or sold. What is a service? Work done for others, such as haircuts or repairs. • Identify Business Symbol Cards • Does this business provide a good or a service? • Place identified card on map

  35. Activity – Floor Map Step 3 • Place businesses on your own map • How did you choose where to place your businesses?

Activity – Satisfy a Want Step 1 Problem: Many people in your neighborhood are having trouble finding birthday cakes in fun shapes for children’s parties. • With your partner, create a business that satisfies this want. • Create a name for your new business. • Draw a picture on your My New Business! sheet Step 2 Share with the class
