Backgrounds • KMA/NIMR has participated to WMO THORPEX Program over the last 10 years. • WMO indicated an Implementation Research Plan of “Subseasonal to Seasonal (S2S) Prediction” with relevance to the Global Framework for Climate Services (GFCS) in 22 Jun. 2012 • KMA/NIMR has been leading CORDEX-East Asia and hosted international workshp twice (November 2011 and 2012) • ※ CORDEX (Coordinated Regional Climate Downscaling Experiment) • KMA/NIMR hosted WMO S2S ICO in • Jeju (WMO5524-13/RES/ARE/WWR, • dated on 25 April) and signed MoU • between WMO and KMA during EC • meeting on 16 May 2013 in Geneva

WMO S2S ICO: Responsibilities • Responsibilities of the ICO • - To support and coordinate planning and implementation of S2S activities • - To provide scientific, technical and secretarial support to the S2S Steering Group • - To assist in cooperation between S2S and other relevant international programmes and activities • - To assist with organizing appropriate meetings, workshops, conferences and other activities relevant to S2S • - To prepare reports, correspondence and publications • - To manage S2S website and data base • - To assist in fund raising and recruiting secondments to join the ICO International S2S Steering Group Korean S2S Scientists WMO S2S ICO

Planning Project for S2S Research in Korea [Funded by KMA/NIMR] • Title of Project - Planning study for the encouragement of Korea’s S2S prediction research • PI (affiliation) - Dr. KIM Joo-Hong (Korea Polar Research Institute) • Duration and Amount • - 4 months (launch in Sep. 2013) and about 80,000 USD • Outcomes • - 5-yr roadmap of S2S prediction research in Korea - Long-term research projects based on the roadmap

Core Research Subjects (for Korean) • ISO • - ISO modeling with a high resolution atmosphere-ocean coupled model • - Improve cumulus parameterization • - Relative importance: parameterization vs. Initialization • - Impact of atmosphere-ocean coupling in a high resolution coupled model • - Hybrid statistical-dynamical forecast • High-impact events (e.g., tropical cyclone, heat wave, cold surge, etc.) • - Develop a probabilistic prediction system of intraseasonal TC activity • - Optimal ensemble method for predicting intraseasonal TC genesis and passage • - Internal dynamics of blocking (synoptic wave-blocking interaction) • - External factors feeding blocking high (e.g., heat source, teleconnection, and wave propagation from the stratosphere) • - Impact of horizontal/vertical resolution & physical processes • - Develop an optimal ensemble initialization method

Core Research Subjects (continued) • Stratosphere-troposphere interaction • - Impact of SSW and QBO on NAO/AO • - Incorporation of stratospheric processes in dynamic forecast • Cryosphere elements (e.g., sea ice, snow cover) • - Statistical forecast system of Arctic sea ice extent • - Develop a module of ocean, sea ice and snow initializations • - Improve sea ice rheology/physics based on in-situ observations • Advanced techniques of initialization and ensemble generation • - Optimal initial perturbation generation method for ensemble • intraseasonal prediction ※ QBO, NAO, AO: Quasi-Biennial, North Atlantic, Arctic Oscillation

Plans for WMO S2S ICO • Funds • - KMA/NIMR will try to secure research fund for S2S Research & WMO trust Fund for S2S Program • Training Program • - KMA/NIMR will organize international training course on the S2S for developing countries supported by ODA/KMA and KOICA (2015~) • - APCC will organize training programs for APEC member countries • Meetings, Workshops, Conferences • - S2S ICO will support meetings, workshops, and conferences in Jeju • Employment Plan(by NIMR) • - 1 Senior scientist, 2 Young scientists
