  2. The fates These three women are so old that No one knows where they came from. Lachesis: Assigns each man his destiny. Atropos: Cuts the thread of life. Clotho: Spins the thread of life.

  3. The parents of the Universe Gaea: The Earth, mother of the universe. Uranus: The Heavens, father of the universe.

  4. Uranus and Gaea gave birth to: The Giants: Violence of the sea The Cyclopes: Thunder and lightning The Titans: The most powerful

  5. The titan rulers: Rhea: Ruler of Earth Cronus/Kronus: Ruler of heaven and had six children. They and their offspring were known as the Olympians…

  6. zeus Zeus’s Roman name is Jupiter. He is ruler of all gods and man.

  7. hera Hera’s Roman name is Juno. She is the queen of the gods. She is married to Zeus, and is the protector of married women.

  8. hades Hades’ Roman name is Pluto. He is the god of the Underworld.

  9. poseidon Poseidon’s Roman name is Neptune. He is the god of the sea.

  10. Demeter Demeter’s Roman name is Ceres. She is the goddess of the harvest and the seasons.

  11. Hestia Hestia’s Roman name is Vesta. She is the goddess of hearth and home.

  12. The next generation: These first Olympians had several children…

  13. Hephaestus Hephaestus’s Roman name is Vulcan. He is the only child Zeus and Hera have together. He is the god of the forge and fire, and he is disfigured.

  14. ares Ares’ Roman name is Mars. He is the god of war.

  15. athena Athena’s Roman name is Minerva. She is said to have sprung full-grown from Zeus’s head. She is the goddess of wisdom.

  16. Prosperpina Prosperpina’s Roman name is Persephone. She is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter. She is married to Hades and is the queen of the Underworld.

  17. Apollo Apollo’s Roman name is also Apollo. He is the god of the sun and music. He and Artemis are twins.

  18. aphrodite Aphrodite’s Roman name is Venus. She is the goddess of love and beauty.

  19. hermes Hermes’ Roman name is Mercury. He is the messenger of the gods. He is also the god of thieves and travelers.

  20. artemis Artemis’s Roman name is Diana. She is the goddess of the moon and the hunt. She is the twin sister of Apollo.

  21. dionysus Dionysus’s Roman name is Bacchus. He is the god of wine, revelry, and the joyous life.

  22. The gods are controlled by only two things: the interference of other gods, or the decrees of the fates. They are interested in the affairs of men and the other gods. We hope you enjoyed meeting this dysfunctional family!
