Lenin’s Political Reforms In 1922, nation became the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) NEP – New Economic Policy – allowed some capitalism (Stalin would Later change this to a command economy) Bolsheviks rename themselves the Communist Party By Lenin's death in 1924 USSR became a dictatorship controlled by the Communist Party, not the people

  5. Lenin in power • Civil War ends in 1921 • The Bolsheviks have to ask: Now that the revolution of workers has happened, what next? • What does Marx say? • Did this happen?

  6. Whether it is possible for the state to “wither away” or not….the Russians do the opposite. • Lenin = kind of Totalitarian (see HW tonight) • Stalin = VERY Totalitarian

Fascism vs.Stalin’s Communism Similarities: • Both promote total obedience to government authority • Both outlaw political opposition and freedom of speech • Both used propaganda, secret police & indoctrination techniques • Both seek to modernize their countries. Differences: • Communism utilizes a state controlled economy while fascism has a capitalist economy (private ownership of business) • Fascism did not promise a classless (economically equal) society • Fascism emphasizes aggressive nationalism and military force to conquer other countries.
