What is the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)?

CHIP program provides medical coverage for individuals under age 19 whose parents earn too much income to qualify for Medicaid, but not enough to pay for private coverage. It is regulated by the United States Department of Health and Human Services that gives needed funds to states for health care coverage to families with children. The program covers uninsured kids in families with livelihoods that are however too high to even consider qualifying for Medicaid. 1. What is the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)? The Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) was signed into federal law in 1997, and exists to help fund health coverage for children at the state level. Each state has their own program in place, working to primarily serve low-income households. These households are often out of the eligibility range to qualify for Medicaid, or may have workplace insurance that does not cover their children. The state’s program will provide basic coverage for uninsured children 19 years old and under, belonging to households with an income too high to qualify for Medicaid.
