  1. CHOOSING THE RIGHT SELF-TAN FOR YOUR SKIN TONE We are all unique and one size definitely does not fit all when it comes to picking the right shade of self-tan for your natural skin tone. There are hundreds of different shades of self-tan on offer and it’s important to make the right choice if you want to achieve a natural, sun kissed look and avoid those tell-tale orange tones. You might like to see yourself with a deep, bronze hue but if your skin is light and pale, heading for the darker end of the spectrum would not work out well. As a general rule, you should only darken your natural skin tone by a maximum of two to three shades, any more than that and your skin will not match you hair and eye colour, giving an unnatural feel to your look. If you have pale skin with cool undertones you will have already made a great best choice by staying out of the sun and opting for the self-tan option. This beautiful but fragile tone of skin burns with ease and is the most susceptible to damage. If you suspect you fall into this category, take a look at your wrists and you should find veins leaning towards a blue tone. In which case choose a tanning shade of warm caramel which will bring out pinkier undertones and reflect a sun kissed glow without looking too heavy or dark. This shade is also the easiest to build upon, if you did want to go a shade or two darker. For the warmer toned people among us, with fair but not pale skin and natural warm undertones, you can afford to head towards a slightly darker shade. Bronze tones work perfectly on this kind of skin and you will achieve a perfect sun kissed glow by opting for a classic, bronze tone. Be sure not to try anything too dark, just one or two tones darker will do the trick. If you have olive or darker coloured skin with warm tones, you are one of the lucky ones who can stay out in the sun a little while longer before any real damage is done. Of course the safest option is always to stay inside so if you are thinking of opting for a self-tan, you can head into the darker bronze tones with ease. Achieve a natural look by going just one shade darker, or try two for something more intense. It is easy to build up colour and even do a patch test first to make sure you’re not getting carried away. So whatever your natural skin tone is, there is a self-tan colour out there for you. Stick to the golden rule of a shade no more than three shades darker than your own, and you can’t go wrong.
