  2. History of Poi • Poi were invented by the Māori people of New Zealand. • Poi are used by the Māori people as training devices, mainly to improve the strength and dexterity in their wrists and arms, which helps with the use of their short clubs (patu).

  3. Types of Poi: PracticePoi • Practice Poi are simple and soft Poi used for training. They are usually made from something soft like a bean bag or something with weight, tied inside a cloth with shoe laces or ribbons serving as the handel strings.

  4. Glow Poi • Glow Poi are like fire Poi but it is harder to set yourself on fire. They are typically made from some kind of glow-in-the-dark materiel or LED ball attached to a string.

  5. Fire Poi • Fire Poi are Poi that are made of a nonflammable materiel on a chain, with the ends are soaked with a slow burning chemical like paraffin or kerosene and set on fire, They look very cool in long exposure photography.. Please Note: these will set you on fire!

  6. Other types of Poi • There are other types of Poi besides the previous three, like Tailed Poi. Tailed Poi are simple Poi but they have streamers built in so you can see the patterns during the daytime. • Another type of Poi is Sock Poi, which consist of a ball in the end of a long stretchy sock that you wrap around your hand. Sock Poi function like a normal Poi.
