  4. CrossRef History • Announced November 16, 1999 • Incorporated January 2000 • Independent, non-for-profit membership organization • Members: publishers of original scholarly material • Agents, Affiliates, Libraries

Antecedents • Digital Object Identifier (DOI) - 1997/1998 • CNRI, Association of American Publishers • DOI-X Prototype • IDF,CNRI, AAP plus publishers • demonstrated feasibility of using DOIs for reference linking • developed DTD for metadata and data rules • Metadata Deposit (CNRI), DOI Look up (AP), MDDB (Wiley)

Organization • Publishers International Linking Association (PILA) - incorporated in New York, January 2000 • Board of Directors • AAAS (Science),Academic Press (Harcourt), AIP, ACM, Blackwell Science, Elsevier Science, IEEE, Kluwer, Nature, OUP, Springer, Wiley • 61 Member publishers • +60% are non-profit

  10. Issues • Harvard Problem Appropriate Copy Localized Linking • Localized Linking Prototype • CrossRef, DLF, IDF, CNRI, Ex Libris, publishers and libraries (Ohio State, Los Alamos, University of Illinois) • Multiple Resolution

Where are we? • System is live - 2 million articles in database - links being created • Data Center up and running • Critical Mass of Members- legal framework, fees, revenue coming in • Broad-based linking is feasible • DOIs and Metadata lay the groundwork for more sophisticated linking (URLs don’t) • CrossRef is a vehicle for publishers to work with libraries and others

  12. Update on Finances • Start-up loans provided by 8 organizations • $1.2 million • Accounting system in place • Working with accounting firm • Fees • Membership Fees billed • Deposit Fees through September 30th billed

  13. 2001 Budget/Annual Report • 2001 Budget • information available when approved by Board • Draft Budget being discussed • $1.8 million in expenditure • Fee revenue projections/Cash flow projections • Full audit will be done • Annual Report with full audit will be available
