  1. English 2010-108 Project 3 : The investigative report By: Natalie Ormond

  2. The Corporate Presence at SLCC

  3. Intro • At school these days almost every flyer or poster you see will have on the bottom: “Find us on Facebook” or they will have an exact link to the organizations Facebook page. • Does this annoy anyone else? I like to use my Facebook for personal things, I don’t like being asked to join their page on Facebook to get the information that I need.

  4. Problem Statement • I noticed on a lot of college boards most of the websites that are listed to go look at are Facebook links. • Is it appropriate for colleges to use such informal and unofficial webpages, Facebook, for their students to reference?

  5. Rhetorical Audience • I would like to target fellow college students with this investigation

  6. Importance of the Issue • We see these Facebook links every day with out even realizing it • Facebook has an influence in everyone’s lives now whether you have one or not. • Facebook not only keeps college students connected but keeps anyone and everyone constantly connected

  7. Thesis • Facebook is seen by many as to informal of a way of communicating for college institutions; they should be using official web pages rather than Facebook. • I will prove the above statement to be wrong with the background information and history of Facebook.

  8. Did you know this about Facebook ?

  9. The Corporation: The big company • Facebook is the largest social network in the world today • 1 out of every 7 people on earth has a Facebook • 901 million users in the year 2012 • More than 125 billion friend connections • 300 million photos uploaded to Facebook per day • 3.2 billion Likes and Comments generated by Facebook users per day • Facebook is available in more than 70 languages.

  10. Invention of Facebook

  11. FACEMASH • Facebook however, actually started out in theory on October 23, 2003 when Zuckerberg launched Facemash.com • Facemash allowed visitors (his Harvard classmates) to compare two student pictures side-by-side to let them decide who was "hot" and who was "not." • Days later outraged students demanded Zuckerberg shut down the site. • But one thing was clear, people like to go on the Internet and check out pictures of their friends.

  12. thefacebook.com • On January 11, 2004 Zuckerberg registered thefacebook.com domain. • He mentioned in an article in The Harvard Crimson that he was inspired by the Facemash incident to create Facebook • "It is clear that the technology needed to create a centralized Website is readily available ... the benefits are many." (Zeevi, paragraph 4). • He wanted to create a website that can connect people around the University. He figured it would take Harvard years to implement the system that he and his buddies could put together in a week or so.

  13. Facebook • The original website was initially limited to Harvard students only. • Quickly expanded to additional colleges in the Boston area, other Ivy League schools, then eventually just about every University in North America • It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg and some of fellow college roommates at Harvard University including Eduardo Savarin, Dustin Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum and Chris Hughes

  14. They continually implemented Facebook across college campuses and by December 30, 2004 there were over one million members • Facebook was originally invented to keep college and university students connected

  15. Rhetorical Opportunity • Do students like using Facebook for their form of communicating with other college students and college organizations? • I would like to talk to fellow student, see if they have a Facebook, and whether they like to use it for a channel of communication for college. • After that I could share why Facebook was made, for connecting college students.

  16. Talking to Students

  17. Advantages of Using Facebook • Ashley, a student at SLCC, says, “I use Facebook to keep up with clubs at my school.” She also feels, “it is easier to navigate than the official school website.” • Another student, Maddi, says, “I use Facebook for more personal connects … for keeping up with family and friends.”

  18. Disadvantages of Facebook • These same students are aware that being on Facebook is not always a productive use of their time. For example, Maddi admits, “I waste a lot of time on Facebook.” • Some say that without Facebook they would have more time for studying for school • Some students say it effects their grades, and they feel if they didn’t get distracted by Facebook they would have better grades • Ashley discloses that “I get distracted by Facebook quite often,” [and she also shares that she by being on Facebook she] procrastinates doing more important things.”

  19. The Social Network • There was a movie created that was based off the invention of Facebook called The Social Network

  20. Conclusion • So next time you are reading a flyer that says add them on Facebook at school don’t get annoyed like I do • They are simply using Facebook for exactly what it was invented for. • Knowing the background we should be happy that our college is taking advantage of any way of communication that makes it easier for us.

  21. Conclusion Continued… • Overall with the research I have found: • Facebook was originally created by Zuckerberg as a way for college students to communicate, and should still be used for just that. • Facebook can be a great informal way of staying connected but make sure to use is wisely and not waste your precious time.
