  1. PAPER 3, QUESTION 1 Objective: You are going to analyse several video speeches to establish your own thesis statements about various issues. (For tomorrow’s lesson, you are going to prepare a speech in response an issue presented to you today)

  2. MAIN MOCK EXAMINATION FEEDBACK FROM PAPER 3, QUESTION 1... Don’t ramble...make sure you have i) a clear idea of what your opinion is and ii) your overall structure.

  3. Writing to Argue Thesis: a case or argument put forward by the writer of an essay or piece of writing. It is a single sentence that i) sums up their argument and ii) generally explains why they think this argument is true. Antithesis: a case or argument put forward in opposition to the thesis Synthesis: a case or argument that combines points in both the thesis and antithesis

  4. Usually, a writer will structure their letter/article/essay like this: Introduction (With thesis) Point #1 Look at the Charity Williams article from your mock examination... Point #2 Point #3 Etc. Conclusion

  5. ACTIVITY: Video Speech Look at the following videos. Figure out: i) What is the topic of the speech? ii) What is the speaker’s Thesis (Sum this up in one sentence) iii) What are their main points in support of this thesis? iv) For each of their points, respond with your opinion - is it a) agreement, b) antithesis, c) synthesis. v) Look at all of your responses to their points. Sum up in a Thesis of your own your opinion on the topic of the speech.

  6. Now, do the same for this article.

  7. HW: Write a 3 minute speech in response to this article. You will be performing tomorrow. Follow THIS structure if you’re stuck! Introduction (With thesis) Point #1 Point #2 Point #3 Conclusion

  9. PLANNING Plan a response that is structured with: • Introduction – thesis – conclusion. Now add to your planning by adding an explanation of the antithesis: • Introduction – thesis – antithesis – conclusion. Now add to your planning by adding a possible synthesis for this issue. c) Introduction – thesis – antithesis – synthesis - conclusion.

Paper 3 – Question 1 In the next two lessons you are going to: • Give a thorough, perceptive, convincing evaluation. • Read effectively between the lines. • Show understanding by developing much of the reading material and integrating it into a response to the task. And write with (a): • Consistent sense of audience; authoritative and appropriate style. • Fluent, varied sentences; wide range of vocabulary. • Strong sense of structure, paragraphing and sequence. • Virtually no error.
