Gatsby’s Parties • People continue to spread rumors about Gatsby – that he’s a bootlegger, he killed a man, and that he’s second cousin to the devil. • Nick recounts all of the people who have gone to Gatsby’s parties, mocking them along the way. • The water motif is developed in the symbolism of their names. Many of the names are similar to fish names. • They are all meaningless swimmers in the ocean of Gatsby’s dream. • “The Dancies came too and S.B. Whitebait…the Hammerheads and Beluga the tobacco importer…” • Nick is highlighting the hypocrisy of the people who attend Gatsby’s parties.
