  2. Four Things to remember in the Three Umpire System

  3. Rotation in the Three Umpire System • Rotation in the Three Umpire System is always in a clockwise direction • When the umpires start from a counter rotated position, there will be no rotation

  4. Base Umpire Going to Outfield • When a base umpire goes to the outfield, the crew reverts to the Two Umpire System • When a base umpire goes to the outfield, that umpire should remain outside and allow the ball to turn them back to the infield and observe the remainder of the play

  5. Fly Ball Coverage

  6. No Runners On 1st Base Umpire: Center fielder to right fielder and all the way to dead ball territory 3rd Base Umpire: Center fielder to left fielder and all the way to dead ball territory Plate Umpire: Any pop up in the infield

  7. R1 on 1B 1st Base Umpire: Right fielder all the way to dead ball territory 3rd Base Umpire: Right fielder to left fielder moving toward the center of the field Plate Umpire: Left fielder and all the way to dead ball territory and any pop up in the infield

R1 on 3B & R2 on 1B R1 on 3B & R2 on 2B R1 on 2B Bases Loaded 1st Base Umpire: Right fielder to left fielder moving toward the center of the field 3rd Base Umpire: Left fielder and all the way to dead ball territory Plate Umpire: Right fielder and all the way to dead ball territory and any pop up in the infield

  10. No Runners On, Hit to Infield 1st Base Umpire: When the ball is hit, step into fair territory at an angle 90 degrees to the path of throw but not more than 45 degrees from the foul line. Base Umpires: Stand upright in a relaxed position 18-21’ beyond the base in foul territory. Take one or two steps with the pitch. 3rd Base Umpire: When the ball is hit, step into fair territory moving to 2B. Plate Umpire: Trail the batter-runner about 1/3 of the way to 1B staying close to the foul line, unless the play takes you elsewhere

R1 on 1B, Hit to Outfield No One Goes Out 1st Base Umpire: Button hook inside the diamond 10-12’ from the line; once R1 commits to 2B rotate home in foul ground 1st Base Umpire: 12-15’ beyond 1B in foul territory, square to plate; go to ready position at the start of the pitch 3rd Base Umpire: 12-15’ at a near 90 degree angle beyond 2B, square to plate; go to ready position at the start of the pitch 3rd Base Umpire: Button hook inside the diamond, once R1 reaches 2B visually confirm PU is at 3B; responsible for plays at 2B and 1B when U1 rotates home Plate Umpire: Trail the batter-runner about 1/3 of the way to 1B; once R1 commits to 2B move to 3B for any play at 3B

Bases Loaded, Hit to Outfield No Umpire Goes Out 1st Base Umpire: Start behind or off of and to 2B side of F4, shade lead runner, square to plate; go to ready position at start of pitch 3rd Base Umpire: 12-15’ beyond 3B in foul territory, square to plate; go to ready position at the start of the pitch 1st Base Umpire: When the ball is hit, button hook inside the diamond between 1B and 2B; take any play at 1B or 2B 3rd Base Umpire: When the ball is hit, button hook inside the diamond near 3B; take any play at 3B Plate Umpire: Move out from behind plate and read the play; responsible for any play at the plate

Bases Loaded, Hit to Infield 1st Base Umpire: When the ball is hit; let the ball take you to the play responsible for any play at 1B or 2B 3rd Base Umpire: When the ball is hit; step into the fair territory and read the play responsible for any play at 3B 1st Base Umpire: Start behind or off of and to 2B side of F4, shade lead runner, square to plate, go to ready position at start of pitch 3rd Base Umpire: 12-15’ beyond 3B in foul territory, square to plate, go to ready position at the start of the pitch Plate Umpire: Move out from behind plate and read the play; responsible for any play at the plate.

Allow the ball to turn you back to the infield and observe. Base Umpires: Stand upright in a relaxed position 18-21’ beyond the base in foul territory. Take one or two steps with the pitch. 3rd Base Umpire: When the ball is hit and your partner goes out button hook inside the diamond; responsible for any play at 1B, 2B and 3B Plate Umpire: Trail the batter-runner about 1/3 of the way to 1B staying close to the foul line

No Runners On, Fly Ball to Outfield U3 Goes Out 1st Base Umpire: When the ball is hit and your partner goes out button hook inside the diamond; responsible for any play at 1B, 2B and 3B Base Umpires: Stand upright in a relaxed position 18-21’ beyond the base in foul territory. Take one or two steps with the pitch. 3rd Base Umpire: When the ball is hit, move parallel to the flight of the ball; responsible for fair / foul and catch / no catch. Allow the ball to turn you back to the infield and observe. Plate Umpire: Trail the batter-runner, then move to the holding zone.

R1 on 2B & R2 on 1B, Fly Ball to Outfield U3 Goes Out 1st Base Umpire: When the ball is hit and your partner goes out, button hook inside the diamond; responsible for any play at 1B, 2B and last runner to 3B. 1st Base Umpire: Start behind or off of and to 2B side of F4, shade lead runner, square to plate; go to ready position at start of the pitch 3rd Base Umpire: 12-15’ beyond 3B in foul territory, square to plate; go to ready position at the start of the pitch 3rd Base Umpire: When the ball is hit, move parallel to the flight of the ball; responsible for fair / foul and catch / no catch. Allow the ball to turn you back to the infield and observe. Plate Umpire: Move to the holding zone and read the play; responsible for any play on lead runner at 3B and any play at the plate
