Whole school support BNF Healthy Eating Week 2016 6,842 registrations Representing reach to 3,129,168 young people Location: 85% England, 3% NI, 7% Scotland (479 schools) and 4% Wales (1% other) Type: 8% nursery, 38% primary, 26% secondary, 4% special, 23% other (e.g. PRUs, sixth form, children centre, farm centre) National Pupil Survey – 14,398 pupils took part Over 80 organisations participated (workplace) Schools downloaded 26,012 resources

Whole school support Impact of HEW Week 2016 We asked schools to rate the impact of the Week … • Raising the profile of food/health 4.6 / 5 (92%) • Promoting healthy eating 4.5 / 5 (90%) • Highlighting health throughout the school 4.4 / 5 (88%) • Promoting physical activity 4.2 / 5 (84%) • Supporting pupil learning 4.2 / 5 (84%) • Supporting teaching 4.2 / 5 (84%) (Weighted average, max score 5)

  5. Whole school support In their own words ….. Watching as the children pushed their boundaries and trying different activities/food and challenges which were out of their comfort zone. We provided a healthy breakfast for the children, encouraging them to try something new. The whole school and staff coming together for the picnic sharing the food made earlier in the day. … This makes the whole week worth while seeing a positive impact on students’ lives We really enjoyed the healthy eating fair where each class shared their healthy food they had made that week – all the children loved it! Encouraging the children to see the challenges as something they do not just in that week, but beyond that.

  9. Whole school support NEW Ambassadors! Schools can nominate five BNF HEW ambassadors – one to represent and promote each of the five challenges during the Week.

  13. Classroom support Eatwell Guide blank and food cards – in your packs! Simple sorting or matching game Discuss the foods in each group. Have they eaten them, do they like them? How often should they be eaten and what is a portion? What other foods can the students suggest? Where would they fit? Devise a diet for a day (or more) using the food cards. Is anything missing?
