A few slides from a wide range of talks at the Barcelona ATLAS meeting last week

This article provides a summary of the recent talks at the Barcelona ATLAS meeting, covering major health warnings, ongoing repairs, and planned improvements for various systems within the detector. The status and commissioning of the detectors are also discussed, along with efforts to improve data taking efficiency and high-rate capability.

  1. A few slides from a wide range of talks at the Barcelona ATLAS meeting last week Major health warning – assembled this morning undigested and in a quasi-random order !

  2. Detector and trigger operation Lot of consolidation/repair work over last months in all systems and general infrastructure. Fraction of non-operating detector 0.1-1% in most cases 8/10/2008 Coverage ~ 70% RPC hit map 12/09/2009 Coverage > 97% 2

  3. Some concerns • LAr Front-End-Board opto-transmitter plug-ins (OTx): • -- 16 failed since May (~1% of EM channels): cannot be replaced without opening ATLAS • -- reason not fully clear yet (though progress made …) • CSC ROD: • -- improvements to DSP software and FPGA firmware  1.5M cosmics recorded in August • -- rate capability today: few kHz; > 40 kHz estimated for first collisions • -- further improvements needed/expected to meet the 75 kHz LVL1 design rate • Long-term reliability of LAr LVPS • Stability and reliability of Inner Detector cooling plant (new system being designed) • Inner Detector Thermal Enclosure Heater pads (preserve thermal neutrality of the SCT • and prevent over-cooling of the TRT): 3 out of 8 barrel pads failed during June 2009 • cosmics. Not a problem for the near future but for the longer term See Detector status and commissioning session today Some improvements being actively pursued … • Data taking efficiency: we reached ~ 80%; can we do better ? • Implementation of stop-less recovery in all systems  will increase fraction of good data • High-rate capability: > 50 kHz achieved in most systems; can we do better ? • etc. 3

  4. Detectors status
