  6. Differences Between Nation and State • More than 200 states in world • State: A political community that occupies a definite territoryand has an organized governmentwith the power to make and enforce laws without approval from any higher authority. • State=country

  7. Differences Between Nation and State Name United States first used in 1776; each state thought of themselves as being independent

Difference Between States and Nations • Nations: Any sizable group of people who are united by common bondsof race, language, custom, tradition and sometimes, religion • Usually, territorial boundaries of states = nations • Territory of France (the nation) and France (the state or country) are the same. • This is called a nation-state.

  12. Essential Features of the State: Population • Stability • Consensus  the more consensus there is, the more stable the government is • Mobility: movement of people in a population • Causes shifts in political power

Real World Application: Syria • What is the MOST Relevant Essential Feature of the State? • Population (Stability) • Explain the connection between Syria and population. • The connection is Stability. There is a lack of consensus between the Syrian government and the opposition. They can’t agree on who should be president. This has led to a civil war, and instability.

  15. Essential Features of the State: Territory • Territory: established boundaries • US has boundaries of 3,618,770 square miles. • Continental boundaries are the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Recognized borders with Canada and Mexico; includes Alaska and Hawaii.

Essential Features of the State: Sovereignty • Political Sovereignty: • Complete independence and complete powerto make laws, shape foreign policy and to determine its own course of action. • No state has the right to interfere with another state’s internal affairs. • Because every state is considered sovereign, every state is considered equal in respect to legal rights and duties
