  2. London • Census data 2013 – 7.8 million inhabitants • 107 different spoken languages • 100 spoken in 30/33 Boroughs • Polish most common other language 2% • Influence International union / conflict • Demographics change by up to 11% per annum.

  3. MPS Language Programme • Introduction - Language Call Centre • Invigoration – “Own Staff” Programme • Creation – Language Training programme • Utilisation –Technology where possible – Video conferencing

  4. Why? • Rise of 45% since 2003 • Annual cost of £13m (2007) • Forecast 20% rise per annum • Travel accounting for 33% • Waiting time 20%

  5. Interpreters’ Home Addresses Hotspots+ Ideal Locations for 8 Video Centres (derived from Interpreters’ locations density) Method: Computes the location of 8 facilities, where the total distance is minimized to all Interpreters’ home addresses (ideal within 5 miles).

Example: Callouts “Interpreter 10902” in 2007 Interpreter 10902 is an interpreter for Polish language. 647 callouts in 2007.Total distance travelled in 2007: 4617 km647 callouts to the closest hub would reduce the total distance by 81% to 873 km. Note: All distances are “as the crow flies”, Road Network or Public Transport Routes have not been considered.

Remote Interpreting Statistics • There have been on average 4,000 R/I deployments per annum since the inception of video conferencing. • The deployments have covered 40+ different languages Including some rarer languages such as: Hungarian Lingala Vietnamese • The average deployment time is 1 hour 45 minutes (30k deployments) • The average travelling time is – 1 hour 10 minutes • The average total cost of a RI deployment is about £165 per booking, a saving of circa £85against the non-RI average of £250 per booking
