  1. Translating & Solving One-Step Inequalities PA 7.4

  2. Example #1 The difference between a number and 51.06 is no more than three hundred and one.

  3. Example #2 Fourteen times a number is at least thirty. • 14x < 30 • 14x ≥ 30 • 30 > x + 14 • 14x ≤ 30

  4. Example #3 A Dodge Minivan has a 1200 lb. capacity. If a family’s luggage weighs 150 lbs, what is the maximum weight of the passengers?

  5. Example #4 Each band member raises $35 for Jolly Rogers. The band must earn at least $575 for the trip. How many band members need to raise money to reach their goal? Write an inequality to represent the relationship.

  6. Example #5 Seth needs to take his math book home tonight. The book weighs p pounds. He put his book bag on which weighed 2.5 pounds. He accidentally set his book bag on the scale when he got home and it read more than 6 pounds. Write an inequality to represent the relationship between the textbook and the book bag and the total weight.

  7. Quick Check 1. You decide to charge $6.25 per hour, h, to shovel snow. Write an inequality to find out how many hours you worked to earn more than $50 2. Luis can throw a football 20.5 yards. He wants to improve his throw by y yards to beat the school record. The school record is 63.5 yards. 3. A trampoline will break if the weight reaches 230 pounds. If you are already on the trampoline and weigh 120 pounds and your friend wants to join you, write an inequality that represents how much weight, w, could be added to the trampoline without breaking.

  8. Translating & Solving Two-Step Inequalities

  9. Example #1 The difference between six times a number and 51.06 is no more than three hundred and one.

  10. Example #2 Twenty is greater than twelve times a number more than five. • 12x + 5 < 20 • 20 > 5 + 12x • 20 > 12x > 5 • 20 > 12x + 5

  11. Example #3 Kevin has $20 in his pocket. He played Laser Tag at Crown and already spent $5. If each arcade game costs $0.75, write an inequality to find how many arcade games he can play.

  12. Example #4 Ms. Ruark and her mom go to Pork in the Park and pay $2 per person at the gate. Ribs cost $7 per tray. If they have $23 total, how many trays of ribs can they buy?

  13. Quick Check 1. The sum of two times a number and eight is equal to twenty. 2. Ernest works in the shipping department loading shipping crates with boxes. Each empty crate weighs 150 lb. How many boxes, each weighing 35 lb, can Ernest put in the crate if the total weight is to be no more than 850 lb? 3. John has $19 to spend at the carnival. He paid an entrance fee of $3, and each ride costs $2. Write an inequality to represent how many rides John can ride.
