  1. BUILDINGCOMMUNITY

  2. WOULD YOU COME BACK TO CHURCH? TO PBC? HERE – TO THIS CONGREGATION?

  3. BUILDING COMMUNITY: Growing meaningful fellowship

  4. Building community means creating an environment where people who commit serious indiscretions, or who do not fit our usual Christian boxes, feel that they will be loved, accepted and forgiven

  5. Luke 7:36–39 (Matt and Mk: in Bethany … Jn: the home town of Lazarus) 36Now one of the Pharisees (Matt and Mk: known as Simon the leper) invited Jesus to have dinner with him, so he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table.

  6. 37When a woman (Jn: Mary) who had lived a sinful life in that town learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume (Mk: made of pure nard), 38and as she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. (Matt and Mk: which she poured on his head)

  7. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. 39When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” (Matt: 8When the disciples [Mk: some of those present] saw this, they were indignant.

  8. “Why this waste?” they asked. 9“This perfume could have been sold at a high price [Mk: for more than a year’s wages] and the money given to the poor.”[Mk: And they rebuked her harshly]) Matt: 10Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a beautiful thing to me. [Mk and Jn: Leave her alone] Lk: 48Then Jesus said to the woman, “Your sins are forgiven.”

  9. IF WE AS A CONGREGATION ARE TO BE BUILDING COMMUNITY, AS CHRIST’S BODY ON EARTH, WE NEED TO BE DISPLAYING THE SAME ATTITUDE JESUS DID

  10. BUILDING A CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY, where BROKEN-SPIRITED PEOPLE KNOW THAT IT’S OK TO NOT BE OK

  11. Luke 7:40–48 40Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. 41“Two men owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he canceled the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?”

  12. 43Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt canceled.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said. 44Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair.

  13. 45You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little.” 48Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.”

  14. TO BEHAVE IN SUCH A WAY THAT OTHERS FEEL LOVED EVEN THE UN-LOVELY TO CREATE AN ENVIRONMENT, AN ATMOSPHERE, WHERE THE BROKEN, THE UNLOVELY EXPERIENCE GRACE FROM US

  15. Father, we have sinned In word And deed And thought Through ignorance Through weakness Through deliberate fault We’ve sinned against our neighbours And against you, Lord; Now we are truly sorry, and we turn to you once more

  16. We do not presume to come to your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord whose nature is always to have mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat and drink by faith, that we will be spiritually strengthened to love and serve Jesus Christ as Lord all our days. Amen
