  1. Albemarle Girls Tennis 2001

  2. The Girls Tennis team had high hopes for this years squad after last year’s strong showing. The Patriots exceeded everyone’s expectations but their own. They lost only one regular season match winning 13 in a row and going a perfect 10-0 in the district. The patriots called upon their skill and depth as they traveled through the Commonwealth District for the first time. Seniors Shelley Morris and Angela Ishee provided leadership and steady play for a team that also featured seven juniors. Solid performances from Emily Arthur, Jenna Centini, and Tiffany Shih allowed the patriots to win the Commonwealth Title in their first attempt. Meghan Cushman, Sydelle Gonias, Megan Klas, and Kim McKay also saw action for the team and provided the Patriots with depth and experience other teams couldn’t match. Young players like Laura Brashear, Emily Hiller, Esther Kaplan, and Ashley Newton all stepped up and added in building a team that sets a high standard for its opponents. The team once again advanced into the post-season playing in the District and Regional Tournaments. The team captured their District Title for the first time since 1981. Individually, #1 seed Shelley Morris and the #1 doubles team of Morris and Emily Arthur made noise as they sought to advance in the post-season individual tournaments. The team battled tough opponents, injuries ,illness, long trips, world events, and weather to have their most successful season in recent memory. Returning all but two team members and having established a solid foundation of young players, the team will likely be a force again next year and make a run at titles beyond the regular season. Seniors Angela and Shelley AHS #1 DISTRICT CHAMPS!
