  1. Baby Think It Over • Purpose- The Purpose of the Baby Think It Over Program is to provide an experience for young adults to simulate the parenting of an infant. The program explores the emotional, financial and social consequences of parenting.

  2. What is this Thing? • The infant simulator is a lifelike, life-size (20 1/2 inches) vinyl baby weighing 6.5 pounds. It is anatomically correct and available in both sexes and five different ethnicities. An internal computer simulates an infant crying at realistic, random intervals 24 hours a day. Intervals can be adjusted from 15 minutes to 6 hours for a normal, cranky, or particularly easy to care for baby. • The "parent" is given a non-transferable key attached to a hospital bracelet on his or her wrist that must be inserted in the Baby for a specific length of time to simulate feeding, bathing, diaper-changing and comforting. Care sessions last from 5 to 35 minutes. If the "baby" has been properly cared for, it will coo to signal the end of the session. If it is neglected (allowed to cry for more than one minute) or handled roughly (dropped, thrown or struck), tamper-proof indicators on the computer will alert the instructor.

  3. Objective 1 • Explore that infants’ demands are unpredictable, and must be met promptly. • Students will be able to feed, rock, burp, and diaper their infant. • Students will be able to identify cries by their infant that signify the baby has been hurt, or needs to be in a different position.

Objective 2 • Appreciate parenting responsibilities change ones lifestyle. • Students will be able to move from place to place always taking their infant with them at all times. • Students will be able to change their infant’s cloths at least twice daily. • Students will be able to bath their infant at least one time daily.

  5. Objective 3 • Understand that infants require a great deal of time and attention. • Students will be able to move from place to place always taking their infant with them. • Students will be able to change their infant’s cloths at least twice daily. • Students will be able to bath their infant at least one time daily. • Students will be able to make choices on the importance of current events in their lives. • Students will be able to understand what shaken baby syndrome is.

  7. Care Schedules • Baby’s care schedules are 24 hour periods. They are based on real baby activities taken from parent kept journals.

  8. What Baby Does • Baby follows the schedule of a real infant—it needs to be fed, burped, changed, and rocked at the same times a real infant needed care. Instructors can choose from 15 different schedules. A student must actually feed Baby with a bottle or breastfeeding device, change Baby’s diaper, and hold Baby while rocking or burping. Baby cries, coos, burps, coughs, and makes breathing and feeding sounds that are recorded from real infants.
