As a Board Member • Represent the interest of the people served by NCBMP. • Focus my efforts on the mission of the organization and not on my personal goals. • Not use the organization or my service on this Board for my own personal advantage or for the individual advantage of my friends or supporters. • Keep confidential information confidential

As a Board Member cont’d • Keep all Board issues with an open mind, prepared to make the best decision for the whole organization. • Do nothing to violate the trust of those who elected me to the Board or those we serve. • Never exercise authority as a Board member except when acting in a meeting with the full Board or as I am delegated by the Board.

Your Liability as a Board Member • Regular attendance at board meetings • Know your board policies well and follow them • Examine minutes before they are approved. • Clarify each motion before voting. • Ask the legal counsel for clarification when a question of legality arises. • Ensure that liability insurance exist to cover the organization.

Setting the Vision • An organization’s vision is its description of its desired future. • The vision defines the boards destination, helps the board set direction and is the foundation for board actions and decision making • The clearer the vision, the easier it is for the people to create the mental image that the board is striving to achieve.

  23. Setting Strategic Direction • A board sets out on a mission to transform the current reality into a desired future. • The board mission is the reason the organization exists. • Goals define the board’s strategy for achieving the mission.

  24. Approve the Budget • A budget is simply a forecast of expected revenues and expenditures for a stated period of time, usually a year.

  25. Focus on Results • The board’s eyes should always be looking beyond the present to the future. • The board should set clear expectations for performance and results.

  27. Advocating for the Membership • Effective governance requires that board members keep their members’ needs as their high priority • Boards primary focus must be toward the membership and how the organization’s mission and vision serves their needs.

  28. Communicate Effectively • The board speaks as a corporate body. • The Chairman is the official spokesperson of NCBMP. In his absence, the President is the official spokesperson.

Commitment Four Types of People: • Cop-outs: People who have not goals and do not commit. • Hold-outs: People who don’t know if they can reach their goals, so they are afraid to commit. • Drop-outs: People who start toward a goal, but quit when the going gets tough. • All-outs: People who set goals, commit to them, and pay the price to reach them.
