  2. Date and Place of Birth Charles was born on November 22nd, 1890. de Gaulle was born in Lille, a northern France city. Lille, France, Charles de Gaulle’s birthplace.

  3. Childhood and Family Charles’s father was a teacher. de Gaulle was raised to seek revenge on Germany after France’s war with Prussia, a nation that would later make up most of Germany. He was taught at an early age to value his long family history of fighting for France.

  4. Education Charles began classes at Saint-Cyr, the best French military academy in 1909. de Gaulle was called “the Big Asparagus” by classmates because of his height. He was 6’ 5. He excelled at Saint-Cyr and he graduated from it in 1912. Saint-Cyr, the military academy Charles de Gaulle attended.

  5. Career Charles served as a captain in the army in World War I. After the First World War, de Gaulle was constantly at odds with his superior officers. The French ignored most of his military strategies and they were later used by the Germans in World War II.

  6. Important Facts Charles was the leader of the Free French Forces in the Second World War. de Gaulle made his best efforts to keep France away from the United States and the Soviet Union, the two biggest superpowers at the time following WWII. He pulled France out of the North American Treaty Organization.

  7. Works and Inventions Charles wrote memoirs after resigning as president of France in January of 1946. de Gaulle continued to write more memoirs after resigning as president of France again in 1969.

  8. Why de Gaulle is Remembered Today Charles de Gaulle delivering a speech on the radio during World War II. Charles was the best-known figure in the French Resistance in WWII. de Gaulle was the first president of France. His best service to his country was preserving democracy in France.

  9. Death and Cause of Death Charles died on November 9th, 1970. de Gaulle succumbed to a heart attack. He was 79 years old when he died.
