  1. Scholarships and Bursaries Every dollar counts!

  2. Definitions • Scholarships Scholarships are awarded for scholastic achievement. In certain cases, financial need may be taken into account. Community and volunteer involvement is often considered when awarding scholarships.

  3. Definitions (cont’d) • Bursary A Bursary is a grant that is distributed on the basis of financial need. When applying for a bursary you must complete an application form detailing your current financial status.

Where to look? • www.grimsbyeagles.com Please check out the list of current scholarships on the “Graduate Resources” page in the Guidance section of the website • www.dsbn.org/ On the Board of Education website please click on the “Guidance” link under the “Student” heading. Then click on “Student Scholarships and Awards”. There you will find a month by month list of available scholarships usually with direct links. • Parent’s work place-Many companies offer scholarship opportunities for the children of employees.

  5. What will you need to do? • Complete an application. I have included links to applications, where available on our website. • Provide Letter(s) of Recommendation. Often from a teacher or someone familiar with your academic and/or extra curricular achievement. • Complete an essay or essays. • Provide proof of marks. Often an official transcript is required. Please give me enough notice to get one ready for you. • Provide evidence of extra-curricular involvement/leadership. • Provide proof of financial need. Some scholarship opportunities require this. • Be nominated by the school. If you are interested in a scholarship where this is required please give me some advanced notice.

University Scholarships • Each university has a Finance/Student Awards link or something similar on their website https://experience.brocku.ca/Undergraduate_Study/Awards.ezc • Entrance scholarships-given automatically based on entry average. The higher the average, the larger the scholarship. Universities a greater distance from the Golden Horseshoe tend to offer more money.

  7. University Scholarships • Major Scholarships-most university offer a handful of these. Can be worth tens of thousands of dollars. Sometimes have a financial need component. • Faculty Specific Scholarships-these are tied to particular programs

  9. Closing Thoughts • Look ahead for scholarship and bursary opportunities • Create a portfolio of letters of recommendation and essay responses that you can reuse • Watch due dates carefully • Don’t try to apply for too many-applications can be very time consuming
