Intention • Develop a TEACHING AGENDA by setting instructional goals (economic content and other skills) and use classroom time, assignments, and beyond classroom activities to achieve goals • Recognize good teaching requires effort (time!) • Content • Delivery • Administration • Beyond course • Learn from experience and others

  4. Organization • Website • Syllabus • Classroom time • Assignments • Discuss expectations

  5. Respect • Treat students as valued individuals • Match expectations • Administer course efficiently • Carefully select the textbook • Make yourself available • Maintain leadership

  6. Engage Students in Classroom - Rules • Activities must be DIRECTLY on topic • Explain why you are doing it • Review how activity relates to material • Never make a student look foolish

  7. Engage Students in Classroom - Ideas • Delivery of material • Props • Music • Case studies and real world examples • Ask questions • Games and experiments • In class team projects • In class readings • In class writing assignments

  8. Beyond the Classroom • Carefully select these activities to meet goals • Level of involvement can vary • My activities • Club advising or participation • Study abroad program

  9. Conclusions • Develop a teaching agenda with goals for student outcomes and your career • Recognize effort required • Prioritize to best meet goals • Seek input • Evaluate progress • Make changes
