  1. You’ve Been Drafted!! Yikes - What Have I Gotten Myself Into!!

  2. Augusta County Public Schools “Newbie” Testing Training Spring 2013

  3. Plan for Today • Basic Procedures for Testing Security online testing accessing practice tests paper testing Training examiners Pearsonaccess practice online writing • New in 2012-13 • PEMSolutions/Practice Tests for Non-writing • Eims-pivot table/analysis • Tricks of the Trade

  4. Security • Read test security agreement carefully • Employment and license are in play • We do not want anyone to lose a job over test security/procedures • We do want all students to be assessed fairly.

  5. Basic No-No’s • Providing answers coaching • Allowing cheating • Keeping copies of test questions in any format. • Copying tests or portions of tests • Altering students answers • Excluding students from tests

  6. Monitoring Test Sessions • Students should not mark answers in test booklet and then transfer answers. • Examiner must not specifically prompt a students to go back and look at a question. They can say review your test carefully. • At the review screen say “read the screen carefully” • No help! No defining of words, rewording the question, no hints, no clues

  7. Monitoring Sessions • Except the writing prompt, a proctor cannot read tests for students unless specified in IEP • Proctors should proctor. Not read test, not grade papers, not creating a key to the test. • Proctors do not touch a student’s mouse • (specific exception is the scribing of writing prompt – the only exception).

  8. Monitoring Sessions • In answer to a student question – read it carefully and choose the best answer • Do not consult with student when they way the question is bad. Record the question number and form number and test and pass info to STC. • Breaks – monitored break is allowed

  9. Irregularity • Any occurrence that might result in • An effect on student performance • Influences the reporting of student performance . (wrong test ticket) • Breach of security • Incorrectly administer an accommodation • See page 35. • Report to Gordon

  10. Issues to attend to now • Practice writing test • Getting late now but make sure that all students to be testing have practiced on the practice writing tool. • Go here for actual tool to be used. • http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/standards_docs/english/2010/online_writing/index.shtml • Or search DOE site for “practice writing tool”. • Practice in keyboarding? • Outline/web on paper.

  11. Converse with School Tech • Are computers ready • How do students login? • What is the proctor caching computer name? • Is there easy access to writing practice tool? • Does tech know where answers are stored on the local server or local computer? • What to do if network down? How to get in touch.

  12. Discussion of online testing • All tests online by spring 2013 (fall 12 for high schools) except WES. • TEI items in reading, science and math. • Practice items and other resources • http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/practice_items/index.shtml

  13. Plan Training • Who will proctor test sessions (on-line and paper) • Review security agreements • Test ticket delivery, security and use • Security of test booklets and prompts • Pre-ID labels • Testing climate • Room arrangement and displays

  14. More on Training • Verifying numbers of tickets, tests and prompts – transmittal forms. • Accommodations – read aloud • How to handle emergencies – fire alarm • Restroom breaks • Testnav tools

  15. Who is tested • EVERYONE – in some manner • Regular SOL for almost all. • VAAP 1% - high needs • VMAST in reading and math 2% • VGLA still available in writing social studies and science • Did not attempt – absent, medical emergency, LEP exemption (rare), writing science social studies

  16. Scheduling • Two sessions a day are certainly reasonable • Not necessary to test all students on a test on the same day. • Consider interruptions • A student test must be completed in a single day. • Accommodation of multiple test sessions requires a paper test. Does not apply to direct writing (short paper).

  17. Test Sessions • Special sessions • Audio, read aloud • Special forms • Large print, audio tape. • Who proctors? Who reads aloud. • Monitor of hallways and assistance to testing rooms

  18. Testing rooms and materials • Screens to block view? • Remove materials that may provide answers • What materials are needed? • Online tools • Scratch paper • Read manipulatives for each test!

  19. Paper tests • Direct writing requires dictionary (Permitted for paper only not online) • Check in and check out of materials – signed form • Learn about early warning system.

  20. New Assessments and SOL’s • New Reading, Writing and Science standards and tests this year • Flanagan items on teacher drives in schools. • New level of rigor • Paper versions of TEI. • New tests means a delay in reporting of scores. possible that we will not have scores before the last day of school.

  21. Pre-ID labels - paper • Have not yet arrived. • Will deliver to school upon arrival • I recommend placing labels on answer sheets after students test. • BE CAREFUL – • Billy Johnson written name – Sally Jones on PRE-ID

  22. Test Day • Deliver materials to teacher or have them pick up from you. • Use The examiners/proctors transmittal form to document the number of tests or prompts. • Pick up tests or prompts from the teachers • Tests and prompts must be kept secure by the teacher while in their possession. • Teacher should deliver each test/prompt to each student and take them up from each student. – not hand them down row.

  23. Test Day • Count test booklets as they are returned to you. • Count answer documents as they are returned to you. • Scratch paper is to be shredded • Examiner’s manuals are discarded. (keep 1 for reference) don’t send back to me.
