Background - Irish Nurses Organisation • Irish Nurses Organisation is Ireland’s largest Trade Union for nurse & midwives • Membership of 30,000 • INO is wholly owned by its members • Membership: Local Branch and Special Interest Groups • Executive Council of 26 Members • INO Administrative Staff – 40

INO Library & Information Service • Opened in 1997 • Goals: • To be Ireland’s most comprehensive library service for nurses • To provide a high quality library service to all INO Members irrespective of their geographic location • Collection: • 6,000 books,reports; 120 periodicals & 40 e-journals • Datababases: • CINAHL; MEDLINE; British Nursing Index • Fulltext E-Journals • Services: • Interlibrary loans; Literature seaching; training; • Current Awareness Services; Online Access to Library via intranet and internet – www.ino.ie & www.nurse2nurse.ie

Year 1999/2000 What electronic services were available to nurses? • Static information pages • Disconnected knowledge base access • Limited electronic retrieval system • Traditional thesaurus based archiving • Predominantly CD-ROM & Intranet based systems • Almost no multimedia content • No access to the library from anywhere at any time

  5. Beginnings of www.nurse2nurse.ie • Personal – goal/aspiration • To bring information to nurses in the easiest and most streamlined way as is possible • To help nurses to communicate their information needs amongst each other.

  6. Research “Web-based information needs of Irish Nurses Engaged in Contining Professional Education in Ireland” A random sample of 100 nurses from across all the disciplines were surveyed using a postal questionaire

Results of Postal Questionnaire: Problems in accessing information What did my exerpience, studies & research show: • No time • Studying & shift working hours • Geographical location • Lack of specialised information • Lack of confidence in using information technology • Lack of Literature searching skills • Lack of up-to-date Research • Lack of a Database of Irish Nursing/Midwifery Research

  8. Nurses main reasons for seeking information • (95%) Keeping up todate in my field • (81%) Continuing education • (68%) Seeking information for a particular case or condition or clinical problem

  9. Sources nurses use to seek information quickly • (57%) Colleagues at work • (44%) Read journal articles monthly • (32%) Texbooks/Journals in libraries • (26%) Textbooks/Journals on the ward or at home • (22%) A minority read journals weekly

What has nurse2nurse to offer? • Nurse2nurse has been developed with Nurses & Midwives in mind and has been made as simple as possible to use. • Topic Based (5000 topics) N2N Topics • Nurses can publish their research, reviews or ongoing research projects. • Become Topic Editors • Discussion groups for each topic have been allocated. To allow nurses keep in communication with colleagues undertaking similar research. • Sharing of knowledge with other nurses & midwives.
